The Lotus Europa is a mid-engine - sports cars of the British car manufacturer Lotus Cars . It was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006 and is designed as a Gran Turismo . Its name is based on the Lotus Europa (Type 46/54/65/74) from 1966 to 1975, the car had 57 to 93 kW (78–126 hp) and was only available in Europe. In 2006 the model came on the market as the Europa S. From 2008 a stronger version than Europa SE was offered. The basic model was now only called Europe .

design

Compared to the closely related Lotus Elise , the design of the Lotus Europa is more elegant than aggressive. The Europa also offers a fixed roof, a higher trunk volume of 154 liters, easier entry and exit, a passenger airbag, air conditioning and electric windows. The curb weight is 995 kg.

technology

The Europa S is powered by the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine from General Motors already installed in the Opel Speedster , which also develops 147 kW (200 hp) and a torque of 272 Nm. In contrast to the five-speed gearbox of the Opel Speedster, the Lotus uses a six-speed gearbox. Due to the concept, the performance of the Europa S is slightly below that of the Opel Speedster Turbo, with the same drive unit.

Europe SE

After the Europa S triggered rather restrained reactions from buyers and the motorsport press, the head of development Roger Becker took on optimizing the car himself. The chassis has been completely redesigned for the Europa SE model and provided with a harder damper / spring combination, new anti-roll bars and wider / larger wheels. The engine was given a larger turbocharger, which, in addition to increasing performance, also results in an even power delivery. Furthermore, 308 mm AP racing brakes have now been installed on the front axle, which, in combination with the widened tires, achieve significantly improved braking performance. There were also some practical optimizations such as B. the trunk unlocking from the passenger compartment and purely visual enhancements through a full leather interior and a small facelift. The SE model was received with corresponding enthusiasm by the motorsport press. Due to changes in emissions regulations at the beginning of 2010, production of the Europa S was discontinued after 408 units and the Europa SE after 48 units. The Europa SE is therefore likely to be the rarest road sports car in Lotus' history.
