William Zombory (born January 11, 1906 in Temesvár , Austria-Hungary (today Timișoara), † January 17, 1993 ) was a Romanian football goalkeeper . He played 45 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and is the most successful goalkeeper with five goals. He also took part in the 1934 World Cup.

Career

Zombory began playing football in his hometown with Chinezul Timișoara , the most successful Romanian club of the 1920s. In 1925 he first moved to local rivals Sparta CFR Timișoara before returning to Chinezul a year later. In 1927 he won his first championship. In the period that followed, Chinezul, who had previously won the championship six times in a row, was unable to build on previous successes for financial reasons.

In 1930, Zombory finally left Chinezul and moved to professional local rivals Ripensia Timișoara . Since the Romanian professional league Divizia A was only founded two years later, he could not take part in official competitions with his new club.

Ripensia became one of the most successful clubs of the 1930s and Zombory was able to win the Romanian championship four times and the Romanian cup twice by 1938. With five goals - all with a penalty - he is still the most dangerous goalkeeper. After a year at ILSA Timișoara , he ended his career in 1939.

National team

Between 1926 and 1935, Zombory played eight times for the Romanian national soccer team . He made his debut on October 3, 1926 against Yugoslavia . In the following years he could only rarely prevail against his competitors such as Ion Lăpuşneanu and Alexandru Szatmári . National coach Josef Uridil nominated Zombory for the soccer World Cup in Italy in 1934 and used it in Romania's only game against the eventual runner-up in Czechoslovakia .
