Anthony Hamilton (singer)
Anthony Cornelius Hamilton (* 28. January 1971 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) is an American Soul - and R'n'B - singer , who sings in the tradition of classic soul singers of the 1970s. Otis Redding , Sam Cooke and Donny Hathaway are among his strongest musical influences.
Career
Anthony Hamilton had a difficult relationship with his parents and at the age of 15 escaped domestic problems through an adoption. At the age of 10 he sang in the church choir and performed solo at singing competitions and in clubs as a teenager. At the age of 22 he went to New York and found a job with André Harrell's Uptown Records label . Before Hamilton's finished debut album was released, however, Harrell switched to Motown and discontinued the label. So XTC appeared in 1996 at MCA . However, the album itself did not receive much attention, only the single Nobody Else made it to number 63 on the R&B charts.
He then joined the Soulife label , a new label from his home in North Carolina, and worked on a second album. He also worked as a songwriter and background singer for Donell Jones , Eve and D'Angelo, among others . However, this time too the label had to close before his second album was released.
The breakthrough for Anthony Hamilton came in 2002 when he worked with rapper Nappy Roots on his single Po 'Folks . The song not only reached number 19 on the official US charts , but was also nominated for a Grammy . At the Grammy party he was signed by Jermaine Dupri for his label So So Def Records . They recorded an all-new album called Comin 'from Where I'm From , which marked the breakthrough. It peaked at number 33 on the Billboard 200 , stayed in the charts for almost a year and a half, and eventually went platinum . With the song Charlene he had his own top 20 hit, which even reached number 3 in the R&B charts. This was followed by a collaboration with Jadakiss on the song Why? , which came in at number 11 in the USA and also made it known in Europe. A collaboration with Twista on the track Sunshine , in which he was only mentioned unofficially, was a number three hit in the British charts.
The following year he released the old recordings he had made for Soulife on an album with the label name as the title. Also in 2005 a new album called Ain't Nobody Worryin 'was released . Both releases made it into the top 20 in the US and the new album went gold.
Two years later, Southern Comfort was another album with older, previously unreleased recordings that lagged behind the previous albums in terms of success. For this he returned in 2008 with the support of Al Green on his song You've Got the Love I Need . The song didn't make the charts, but the two singers won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance. In addition, Hamilton released another gold album at the end of the year: The Point of It All reached number 12 and was nominated for a Grammy for best R&B album in 2010 . Two album songs also received nominations.
Another three years passed before the next album. Back to Love reached number 12 on the US charts again in 2011 and increased Anthony Hamilton's number of Grammy nominations by two to twelve. The following year he recorded the song Freedom for the soundtrack to the film Django Unchained together with newcomer Elayna Boynton . The song was particularly successful in Europe.
