Ella Mai Howell (born November 3, 1994 in London ) is a British R&B musician.

biography

Ella Mai is the daughter of a Jamaican mother and an Irish father and grew up in south-west London . She moved to Queens, New York when she was twelve, but returned to England after graduating from high school. Together with two other singers, she formed the R&B group Arize . They applied to The X Factor in 2014 , but were not accepted by the jury and disbanded a little later.

In 2015 she released four of her own songs on the music platform SoundCloud and was discovered by DJ Mustard and signed to the 10 Summers label . The first official EP Time was released in early 2016 . She was supported by Ty Dolla Sign as a guest. In the same year EP number two followed, Change , with which she already made it to number 20 on the US R&B charts. The third EP Ready , produced by DJ Mustard, was released in 2017, but it took a year before the breakthrough came with the song Boo'd Up on it . In the US, it rose to number 1 on the R&B charts and was certified quadruple platinum . In the official charts in the USA and Great Britain and other English-speaking countries, the song was also able to place. Another R&B hit followed with Trip , which was released as a precursor to their debut album Ella Mai , which was released in October 2019 . The album reached number 5 on the official album charts and reached platinum status . It was also nominated for an award in the Best R&B Album category at the Grammy Awards .
