The Cathedral of Guanare or Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Coromoto is a Roman Catholic church in Guanare , the provincial capital of Portuguesa , Venezuela . The cathedral of the diocese of Guanare is consecrated under the patronage of Our Lady of Coromoto to the Virgin Mary and also bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

A first church on the site was started in 1710 and completed by Francisco Valenzuela in 1742. This church had to be closed after the damage caused by the earthquake of October 15, 1782. Reconstruction work began in 1788 and was completed on November 3, 1807.

The church was opened on May 24, 1949 by Pope Pius XII. Elevated to the rank of minor basilica, in 1954 it became the cathedral of the newly created diocese. In 1960 Venezuela declared it a historical monument. The church then housed the miraculous image of the Virgin of Coromoto, which was crowned in 1985 by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of his visit to Venezuela and is today in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Coremoto in Guanare , consecrated in 1996 .

Building

The church space under a wooden gable roof is divided into three naves by two rows of columns. The chancel is illuminated by a dome above. The bell tower with an octagonal tower and church clock is on the right-hand side of the entrance. Worth mentioning are the altarpiece in the baroque colonial style of Churriguerism , which was created by José Quiñones, as well as the stained glass windows that Franz Xaver Zettler made in Munich.
