BJ the Chicago Kid (born November 23, 1984 in Chicago , Illinois ; actually Bryan James Sledge ) is an American R&B musician.
Career
Bryan James Sledge grew up in his native Chicago . His parents were church choir leaders in the south of the city. At the age of 19 he went to Los Angeles , where he initially worked as a background and studio singer. Among other things, he worked for Mary Mary and Stevie Wonder on his single A Time to Love . In 2006 he was performed under the abbreviation BJ as a guest singer on Impossible by Kanye West , which was a minor R&B hit. He has also worked as a songwriter for R&B and gospel songs for Lalah Hathaway , among others .
His first major solo release as BJ the Chicago Kid was the 2012 album Pineapple Now-Laters , on which Kendrick Lamar was featured on two songs. It helped him to a record deal with Motown and the first single release Good Luv'n . In 2014 he released the mixtape The MAFE Project . There were also two collaborations with Schoolboy Q this year : once on their own second single It's True and then on Studio , a track from Schoolboy Q's number one album Oxymoron . The song peaked at number 10 on the hip-hop / R&B charts and number 38 on the official charts, and was nominated for a rap award at the 2015 Grammy Awards .
Other singles followed, including Chance the Rapper and OG Maco, and participations in, among other things, the album Compton by Dr. Dre and the debut album B4.DA. $$ by Joey Bada $$ . In February 2016, BJ's second album In My Mind was released . It hit number 4 on the R&B charts and debuted at number 43 on the Billboard 200 . There were three Grammy nominations for the album and the two songs Turnin 'Me Up and Woman's World , but it could not win an award.
In July 2019, BJ the Chicago Kid released his third album 1123 .
