Joey Badass (* 20th January 1995 in New York as Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott ), and Joey Bada $$ written is an American actor , rapper and hip-hop - musicians , who at the York New independent label Cinematic Music Group is under contract. He is a co-founder and member of the hip-hop collective Pro Era (Progressive Era) . Joey Badass was selected by the US music magazine XXL for 2013's XXL Freshman Class .

biography

Childhood and youth

Jo-Vaughn Scott was established in 1995 Flatbush , a neighborhood in the New York district of Brooklyn born when second oldest of five children. He has three half-brothers and a half-sister on his father's side. His father is from Jamaica , his mother from St. Lucia . Jo-Vaughn grew up with his mother in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant .

According to his own statements, he already had a weakness for hip-hop , rhythm and blues , soul , soca and reggae as a child . But he came to rap through his interest in poetry as an eleven-year-old together with his childhood friend Kirlan Labarrie, aka Kirk Knight . After middle school, Jo-Vaughn attended Edward R. Murrow High School , a so-called magnet school that focuses on music, dance, theater, graphic design, and the arts. Music career

Beginning of the musical career

Initially, Jo-Vaughn Scott made a name for himself in the local rap scene under the pseudonym JayOhVee . Together with his school friend Capital STEEZ , as well as with CJ Fly and Powers Pleasant , he founded the creative collective Pro Era in 2009 , which now has more than 15 members, consisting of singers, rappers, music producers and graphic designers. Scott changed his pseudonym to Joey Bada $$ , recorded his first singles in a simple, makeshift music studio in his home and uploaded freestyles to Internet platforms such as YouTube . Johnny Shipes, founder of the Cinematic Music Group label , found out about him through a video uploaded by Joey in October 2010 and picked up by the US hip-hop website "WorldStarHipHop" and contacted him on Twitter . In 2010 Joey Badass was signed to Cinematic Music Group together with Pro Era .

2012: First mixtapes

In February 2012, published Pro Era her debut mixtape The Secc $ Tap.e . Joey and Capital STEEZ had already uploaded the song "Survival Tactics" with the accompanying music video to the YouTube channel "PROfckingERA" and for the first time gained greater attention. The music video for the single "Hardknock" by Joey Badass and CJ Fly was also well received.

On June 12, 2012, Joey Badass released his debut solo mixtape in 1999 and shortly thereafter released a music video for the single "Waves", in which Va $ htie Kola was a director and music producer. The first collaborations with Mac Miller also took place in 2012 . Joey Badass appeared as a guest musician on the single "America" ​​and appeared in April 2012 as an opening gig for Miller. On the morning of December 24, 2012, Capital STEEZ, Joey Badass' close friend, Pro Era co-founder and talented Raph prospect, committed suicide. The 19-year-old jumped from the skyscraper that housed the Cinematic Music Group after tweeting the words "The End" on December 23 just before midnight . The death of STEEZ came as a shock to the entire Pro Era collective. Just a few days before, Joey Badass, Capital STEEZ and Pro Era had released the mixtape Peeps The Aprocalypse .

2013: Summer Knights EP

Joey Badass brought out the mixtape Summer Knights on July 1, 2013 , which was initially planned as an EP and a prelude to his debut album, but was officially converted to an LP mixtape in May 2013 . Joey Badass dedicated the mixtape to his late friend Capital STEEZ. In addition to Kirk Knight and Chuck Strangers, DJ Premier , Statik Selektah , Oddisee, Lee Bannon, Navie D, Bruce Leekix, The Alchemist and Daniel Dumile participated as producers . The debut solo single "Unorthodox", which was released on January 14, 2013 as the first single of the mixtape on iTunes and was produced by DJ Premier, as well as the accompanying music video on YouTube on March 13, enabled Joey Badass to break through .
