XXXTentacion , real name Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy (born January 23, 1998 in Plantation , Broward County , Florida - † June 18, 2018 in Deerfield Beach , Florida), was an American rapper and singer.

life and career

Due to his mother's financial problems, Onfroy spent most of his childhood with his grandmother. His interest in music was sparked when his aunt convinced him to attend the school choir first and then the church choir. However, shortly after joining, he was kicked out of the school choir because he was involved in an attack on another student. Onfroy was expelled from middle school after having exposed himself to numerous other physical arguments with others. Onfroy attended Piper High School, but dropped out in 10th grade.

Onfroy released the first song News / Flock in June 2013 under his stage name XXXTentacion on Soundcloud . Subsequently, he often uploaded small excerpts from his songs, which he often removed from the platform after a short time. In 2014 he spent a year in a juvenile detention center. There he met Stokeley Clevon Goulbourne (better known by his stage name Ski Mask The Slump God ), who became his best friend.

On March 5, 2014 , Onfroy released the song Vice City on Soundcloud, which is his first professionally recorded track in the studio. During the year he continued to publish smaller excerpts from his songs, which he either published later or removed from the platform. Onfroy joined the group Very Rare founded by Ski Mask The Slump God , which he soon left to found Members Only together with Goulbourne . At the end of the year, on November 21, 2014, Onfroy released his EP called The Fall .

In 2015 the first joint mixtape with Ski Mask The Slump God, which is called Members Only Vol. 1 , was released. On October 23, 2015, a mixtape was released under the name Members Only Vol. 2 , on which Onfroy can be heard with members of the collective he founded. Just before the end of the year, another song called Look At Me was released, which would later make for his big break.

Onfroy often referred to himself as an artist rather than a rapper, as he mixed many styles of music and therefore cannot be assigned to any genre; This becomes clear in his EP Willy Wonka Was a Child Murderer , released in 2016 , in which the music is mainly influenced by heavy metal and indie .

In 2016 Onfroy moved in with the American rapper Denzel Curry , also known as ULT House . Before that, he quit his job as a call center employee because he wanted to concentrate on his steadily growing music career. In June 2016, Onfroy was arrested for robbery and assault with a lethal weapon. Having one in October 2016 bail had left and had been released, he was arrested again in the same month; the charges were deprivation of liberty, witness manipulation and dangerous bodily harm to his ex-girlfriend. It is unclear whether he was the one who was responsible for her assault.

His eight-track debut project Revenge was released on May 16, 2016, and his collaborative mixtape Members Only Vol. 3 was released on June 26, 2017 via SoundCloud. He made his breakthrough in the same year with the song Look at Me! . While he spent most of his time in prison from July 2016 to March 2017, this title, which was first published in 2016 and re-released in 2017, gained more and more attention on the SoundCloud and YouTube platforms and finally helped him achieve a worldwide breakthrough thanks to the sudden viral surge. The song rose to number 34 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and a top 37 on the Canadian Hot 100 .

Onfroy was released on bail on March 26, 2017 and has since been on two-year probation . Another trial followed in Miami , Florida on December 15, 2017 , during which he was arrested. On December 20, he was sentenced to two months of house arrest .

On August 25, 2017, Onfroy released his debut album 17 . The album peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold over 86,000 units in its first week. In September 2017, he announced that the album Bad Vibes Forever would still be in production. Seven songs from the album made it to the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with Jocelyn Flores reaching number 34 on the charts, making Onfroy's most successful song Look At Me! replaced.

He was part of the 2017 XXL Freshman Class of the music magazine XXL . On October 20, 2017, he signed a contract with the major label Capitol Music Group , a subsidiary of Universal Music . After six days he canceled the contract.

At the same time he made this announcement that he would not play any more music for a very long time because he was exhausted. On October 28, 2017, he announced via Instagram that he would end his career completely, which he indirectly withdrew on November 17 with the announcement of the mixtape Bad Vibes Forever .

In 2018 Onfroy published a video on his YouTube channel called “#THEHELPINGHANDCHALLENGE” in which he donated toys, musical instruments, game consoles and other gifts to an orphanage. At the same time, he announced the start of the challenge, in which he asked his fans to do something good for those in need. A little later, the hashtag had over a million mentions on Instagram.

In February the song Hope was released , which was released in memory of the victims of the school massacre in Parkland . In March 2018 he released Sad! and changes , the first singles from his second studio album ? . ? was released on March 16, 2018 and placed at number one on the US album charts. Onfroy claims to be working on his second studio album Bad Vibes as well as on his mixtape I Need Jesus.

Assassination and Afterlife

Onfroy was robbed and shot by several perpetrators while leaving a motorsport shop in Deerfield Beach on June 18, 2018 while sitting in his car. He died of gunshot wounds around an hour after the attack in a hospital. As of August 7, 2018, a total of four suspects had been detained. Two of them are said to have approached Onfroy's car directly, stole a bag with 50,000 US dollars and valuables and shot at it, while the others waited in the getaway car and apparently spied Onfroy in the store beforehand.

On June 21, 2018, the American rapper Trippie Redd released the first post mortem single Ghost Busters , which also includes Ski Mask The Slump God and Quavo.

In August 2018, rapper Sauce Walka released his mixtape called Drip God , on which Onfroy is represented with the song Voss .

On September 19, the single Falling Down was released post mortem with Lil Peep , who had already died on November 15, 2017.

On September 27, 2018, Kanye West announced that Onfroy would be featured on his ninth studio album, Yandhi . On the same day, Lil Wayne announced that he would be featured on his album.

In October 2018, the song Arms Around You was released, on which Lil Pump , Swae Lee and Maluma are also represented. Originally this single was a collaboration with singer Rio Santana, who was already on Onfroy's album ? can be heard, but the decision was finally made for the second version.

On December 7, 2018, the album Skins was released , which is the first album after Onfroy's death.

In January 2019, the Members Only collective founded by Onfroy released the album Members Only, Vol. 4 .

The album Broken Kids Club by rapper Craig Xen, who was a good friend of Onfroy and a member of Members Only, was released on June 12, 2019 and includes Run It Back! also a collaboration with the late rapper.

In July the single Royalty was released , which would be the first song from the new album Bad Vibes Forever . The song includes features by Ky-Mani Marley (a son of Bob Marley ), Stefflon Don and Vybz Kartel. In October, the second single called Hearteater was released. The fourth and final album Bad Vibes Forever was finally released on December 6, 2019.

review

The Guardian described his legacy as “being remembered primarily for the unusually cruel violence he committed against vulnerable people, particularly his ex-girlfriend, crimes for which he never showed remorse.” According to the article, his music reflected "a life lived with disregard for humanity, both one's own and that of other people"; and seldom attempted to display bravery or boasting, instead focusing on " insanity , suicide , extreme misogyny and a prevailing sense of numbness "

An article in The Atlantic voiced similar criticism , although it also noted that XXXTentacion " was a reminder, especially to young fans , that while their injuries were serious, they were not the sum of their lives" and that it " gave voice to their insecurities ." ". Opposing these elements of his legacy , the article noted that while he spent his career encouraging young fans to see their greater worth, the XXXTentacion legacy is still marked by the trauma it both experienced and caused.

Commenting in the Washington Post , Chris Richards commented on the intricate legacy of the XXXTentacion, contrasting how he "encouraged his fans to find hope in the fog of desperation but enthusiastically boasted of the joy he felt in brutalizing others." XXXTentacion's music "The Depressive Solace" as it affirmed the kind of violence he practiced and legitimized the pain of his fans while obliterating the suffering of domestic violence victims. XXXTentacion's music serves as an example for Richards of how “a hateful song” could normalize such feelings in “hateful people”, adding to the deep paranoia in society about the hatred that might reign in the minds of others.
