A mugshot (or mug shot ) is the name given to photos, especially in American English , that the police take of suspects as part of the identification service treatment . The term is made up of the slang term mug for "face, face, visage" and the word shot for "[snap] shot, recording". In the German-language media it is often translated as “police photo”.

The recordings serve various purposes. They can help the authorities and witnesses to identify a perpetrator and are available as mug shots if necessary . In the United States, mugshots are in the public domain and accessible to everyone through the Freedom of Information Act . There are hardly any limits to their distribution, as the right to freedom of the press anchored in the First Amendment is weighted more heavily here than the protection of personal rights , which is why mugshots are often disseminated by the media. They thus fulfill a similar function for the public as the so-called perp walk .

When an arrest is made, the police usually take two mugshots : a frontal and a profile view . In the past, the person to be captured was required to hold a board with the personal information. This is now unusual due to digital photography and capture .
