Güneysu , formerly Potamya (from Greek Potamiá "wetland"), is a Turkish city ​​and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the province of Rize . The city is located about 9 km southeast of the provincial capital Rize .

The district is enclosed by the central district ( Merkez ) of the provincial capital Rize and the district Çayeli . The district was split off from the central district in 1987 with Bucak of the same name . In 1985, at the last census before the change of area, the Bucak Güneysu had a population of 20,873 inhabitants, of which 3,234 inhabitants belonged to the Belediye Güneysu as Bucak Merkezi (= Bucak capital).

The river of the same name , a right tributary of the Taşlidere , flows through the district in a northerly direction.

At the end of 2018, the district consisted of the district town and 21 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 576 residents. Kıbledağı (1,616), Gürgen (916) and Başköy (874 inh .) Were the largest of the villages, eight of which had more than 576 inhabitants. At 105.3 inhabitants per km², the population density was slightly higher than that of the province (90.9).
