Cayeli ( Laz Mapavri) is a Turkish coastal town on the Black Sea and the main town of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the province of Rize . The third largest city in the province is located 18 km northeast of the provincial capital Rize . According to the city seal, Çayeli has been a municipality ( Belediye ) since 1915 .
The district was formed in 1944 and is the second most populous after the central district ( Merkez ). It borders in the northeast on Pazar County , in the east on Hemşin County , in the southeast on Çamlıhemşin County , in the south on İkizdere County and in the west on the central Rize County and Güneysu County . The district has no borders with other provinces.
At the end of 2018, the Çayeli district consisted of two other municipalities ( Belediye ) in addition to the district town : Büyükköy (2,670) and Madenli (3,542 inh.). Furthermore, there were 54 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 310 residents. The scale of the population ranged from 854 ( Derecik ) down to 34 ( İncesu ). The population density (100 inhabitants per km²) was higher than the provincial value of 90.9 inhabitants per km².
At the southern edge of the city, the Sabuncular Deresi flows into the Black Sea.
