17 is debut - album of American rapper XXXTentacion . The number stands for his tattoo, which he has on the right side of his forehead.
history
While in jail for assault and deprivation of liberty , XXXTentacion signed a contract with Empire Distribution.
"I got this really really, really good album called 17. That's more of an alternative, R&B sound," he told us. “Then I've got this mixtape called I Need Jesus, which is mainly rap and the underground sound I did. So I'm trying to give my fans and anybody that comes in and lists to me everything with the mixtape and album. And then I want to come out with Members Only Vol. 3. People are gonna be really surprised about the shit I drop. "
After his release from prison X announced in an interview with WMIB next 17 still Revenge , Members Only Vol. 3 , and I Need Jesus on. He did further promotion via the Periscope , Snapchat and Instagram apps . He made the announcement that the album would have a very different style than his compositions, which were otherwise more in trap or rap rock . It is more for people with depression. Fittingly, he released a short three and a half second clip that showed him hanged from a tree. The clip was sometimes rated as real and for many fans it was initially unclear that it was an advertisement for the upcoming album. This led to a lot of criticism of the musician. More clips followed a little later, but this time with the announcement that they were excerpts from an upcoming music video and apologized for the ambiguous promomove.
Music genre
As announced, the album differed from the rapper's usual style. It's more about emo and indie rock mixed with alternative R&B . Also Shoegaze is included on the album. The songs have only a few beats, but are performed with acoustic guitar or piano accompaniment. He also sings on the album. The album is quite short at 22 minutes. Many songs seem half finished, which contributes a lot to the concept of the album, which mainly takes up topics like suicide, lost love and depression.
Song info
Jocelyn Flores is about the true case of 17-year-old Jocelyn Amparo Flores, who Xxxtencacion discovered on Twitter and whom he wanted to recruit as a model for his fashion brand Revenge. She mysteriously died in a hotel in Coconut Creek , Florida on May 14, 2017 , just 13 days after visiting Xxxtencacion. Her death was counted as a suicide. Xxxtencacion also dedicated the track Revenge to her .
Like Jocelyn Flores, Carry On takes a sample from Shiloh Dynasty .

17 received mixed reviews. While some praised the album for its themes, different musical styles and production, others criticized the length of the album and the deliberate lack of fine-tuning. Yannik Gölz from laut.de said about the album:
“At the end of the day, '17' might best be called an experience. A dark, disturbing and, especially because of the artist's weaknesses and limitations, a unique experience. "
Sermin Usta from intro.de said about the album:
"Because what expands as music on this album is the testimony of sick, filterless thoughts that manic and deeply honest never leave anyone untouched."
The American Rolling Stone considered the album after the surprising death of Xxxtencacion as a groundbreaking album that, like its interpreter, changed hip-hop almost overnight. The success in particular is impressive, as the album entered the charts with a pure distribution deal without a real record company. Hardly a modern album today would do without the elements that Xxxtentacion introduced into the music. Kanye West and Kid Cudi adapted elements of the more vulnerable style for their later albums on their joint album. Other rappers like Juice Wrld . Lil Pump and Lil Skies also have similar elements in their music.
Commercial win
17 was released on August 25, 2017 on Spotify , Apple Music and ITunes . The album debuted to number two on the Billboard 200 with 18,000 sales in the week of release. After Xxxtentacions death, the album entered the Billboard charts again and placed at number seven with 55,000 album-equivalent units .

Singles
A total of three singles were released from the album. Revenge was released on May 18, 2017 as a stream and digital download, initially under the title Garrette's Revenge . It was followed by Jocelyn Flores on October 31, 2017 and finally Fuck Love on January 23, 2018.
The seven songs Jocelyn Flores , Revenge , Fuck Love , Everybody Dies in Their Nightmares , Depression & Obsession , Save Me and Carry On debuted at positions 31, 77, 41, 54, 91, 94 and 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 . In addition, Jocelyn Flores and Everybody Dies in Their Nightmares were able to secure positions 39 and 88 on the British single charts.
