Denzel Curry (2018)

Denzel Rae Don Curry (born February 16, 1995 in Carol City , Florida ), formerly also known under the pseudonym Denzel Aquarius'Killa Curry , is an American rapper and singer. He made a name for himself in the Miami scene with his debut album in 2013 and has since developed into one of the most important exponents of cloud rap . His third album Ta13oo reached number 28 on the Billboard 200 in 2018 .

Life

Denzel Curry was born in Carol City in 1995 to parents of Bahamian descent . He grew up with four brothers in suburban Miami . His father worked as a truck driver for a beverage company. While he was socialized by his parents with music from Parliament / Funkadelic , OutKast , Isaac Hayes , Marvin Gaye or James Brown , he began writing poetry in elementary school . Curry attended Design and Architecture High School (DASH) in the Miami Design District for two years, but was expelled from it. Instead, he graduated from Carol City High in 2013.

Denzel's older brother Treon Johnson, who made a name for himself as a backyard fighter in Miami, was a victim of police violence on March 4, 2014 in Hialeah . The 27-year-old died of cardiac arrest in police custody after being incapacitated by officers with a taser and pepper spray . In a radio interview in 2018, Curry announced that he had been sexually molested by a man as a child . He practices muay thai .

Career

Beginnings in Miami

In the twelfth grade Curry brought a friend over to rap and he became interested in hip-hop greats such as Nas , Jay-Z and Big L to care. With the help of the Audacity software and a microphone, he recorded the first songs and uploaded them to Myspace . After listening to the mixtape Blvcklvnd Rcdix 66.6 , he contacted SpaceGhostPurrp , four years his senior , by sending him some drawings. In 2011 Curry published his first mixtape on the Purrp website under the title King Remembered Underground Tape 1991–1995 . This was followed by the first live appearances with the Raider Klan, formed around SpaceGhostPurrp. With his second tape, on which he processed the violent death of Trayvon Martin , among other things , he attracted the attention of Earl Sweatshirt and Odd Future in 2012 . His political awareness and the rolling video to Strictly 4 My RVIDXRZ impressed the former Punchline - MC Mark Maturah so much that he curries management took over. Curry explained his motivations as follows:

“Everybody has a choice, but if I didn't rap, I don't know what I would be doing. It's my world and keeps me from getting in trouble. [It] gave me something to talk about, inspiration. I'm living in the danger zone. I'm like a reporter reporting everything that's going down and talking to people going through it. "

Debut album and first successes

The single Threatz , released in March 2013, was a viral success and, in addition to MTV Airplay , brought the 18-year-old great media attention for the first time. Appearances at Coachella , SXSW and A3C followed. With his debut album Nostalgic 64 , released the following September, Curry finally emancipated himself from the Raider Klan. While working on this debut, he lost seven friends and relatives, according to his manager. The website spin.com listed him in November 2013 as one of the five best new artist of the month and drew comparisons with Inspectah Deck and Schoolboy Q . From April 2014 he accompanied the Underachievers on their nationwide "Eyes of the World Tour".

After his brother's death, it was a few months before Curry released music again. In March 2016 he followed up with his second album, the hard, minimalist Imperial , on which he was supported by established genre colleagues such as Joey Badass and Rick Ross . The hip-hop magazine XXL then included Curry in its “Freshman Class” of the most promising newcomers. Laut.de found in a very benevolent review that Curry would "splash blood, poison and gall in all directions" on the album.

Chart successes with Ta13oo and Zuu

In 2017 Curry moved to Los Angeles to deepen his work on further album projects. His third studio album and label debut Ta13oo (pronounced " Taboo ") was released in July 2018 by Loma Vista Recordings and brought him international success for the first time. The album was initially released as a single EP on three consecutive days . It reached number 28 on the Billboard 200 and received extremely positive reviews. On the track Sirens the singer Billie Eilish can be heard in the background . She had previously shown herself to be an admirer of his work and helped both with the writing and production of the number. The gloomy video for the most successful single, Clout Cobain , generated more than 60 million YouTube clicks. In February 2019, Curry caused a sensation with a recording of Rage Against the Machines Bulls on Parade for the Australian radio station Triple J.

Without much notice he released his fourth studio album Zuu the following May , which is stylistically very different from its predecessor Ta13oo and expresses his homesickness for Miami. The album was able to place itself in the charts in several countries and reached number 32 on the Billboard 200. The reviews were once again excellent; Pitchfork called the record "the best, most dynamic and overall hardest album of his career". In June and July 2019, Curry supported Billie Eilish on their US tour.

style

Curry at a concert (2017)

Denzel Curry's music is assigned to the genres of hardcore rap , southern rap and trap . Sometimes his style varies from album to album, although he always takes on other pseudonyms such as Aquarius'Killa , Raven Miyagi or Denny Cascade . The furious energy on the first mixtapes, which Curry also transports at live concerts, reveals influences from 2Pac and Buju . According to Complex , he blends influences from the Memphis rap scene with the right-brained, unconventional spirituality of early OutKast and the psychedelic stoner eccentricity of Redman . His rap style is characterized by the dynamic change between different flows , which he uses similar to Lord Infamous and André 3000 . Inspired by Gucci Mane , he recorded his fourth studio album Zuu for the first time entirely in freestyle . Curry names André 3000, Big Boi (both OutKast), Big L , Lord Infamous and Trick Daddy as his five favorite rappers .

Denzel Curry attaches particular importance to the message that he wants to convey. His texts are dedicated to the problems and dangers in his personal environment and move between fiction, actual experiences and nightmarish reality. A class consciousness was evident early on in his lyrical work , for example in the processing of the death of Trayvon Martin ( Strictly 4 My RVIDXRZ ), which was compared with 2Pac and its multiple mentions of the murdered high school student Latasha Harlins. He also addresses police violence ("This goes out to the motherfuckin cops and to the punk police / Wanna see you pop a nigga, wanna see you drop a nigga, no justice no peace!"). On the gloomy, tense Ta13oo his lyrics became increasingly introspective and, in the opinion of the critics, reveal a “torn inner life” or a “tormented soul”. The follow-up album Zuu deals with the rapper's roots in his hometown, family values ( Ricky: "My daddy said, 'Trust no man but your brothers and never leave your day one's in the gutter'") and his rise ( Automatic: " On the road to riches you gotta look out for the serpents / Watch 'em slither to the surface when they see your plan is workin' "). In addition, Curry does not shy away from referring to genre-untypical things like Dragon Ball Z and Mortal Kombat or rock bands like Nirvana and Black Sabbath in his lyrics.
