Audacity [ ɔːˈdæsəti ] ( listen ? / I ) is a free audio editor and recorder or a digital audio workstation . Audio files can be mixed and edited on any number of tracks . The program is written in C ++ and uses the GUI toolkit wxWidgets to provide the same graphical user interface on different operating systems . Audio file / audio sample

The English word audacity means “boldness, courage”, whereby the identical initial letters allude to audio , Latin for “I hear”. The name has nothing to do with the English term city for "city".

properties

Important features:

  • Import and export of all uncompressed audio formats as well as all formats supported by libsndfile or libmad , etc. a. AIFF , Sound Blaster VOC , Matlab MAT, FLAC as well as with LAME or libavcodec of all MPEG formats including tagging using libid3tag .
    • Although Audacity does not want to be a sequencer , MIDI files can be imported (primarily for measurement purposes) and displayed graphically. There is no direct conversion function for MIDI files into other file formats, however (like all other applications with music output) MIDI files can be recorded during playback and then saved in other file formats. For this purpose, the sound system settings of the operating system used must be configured in such a way that recordings can not only be made via connected external sources such as microphone, electric guitar, electric piano, but also the sound card of the device responsible for music output, which can be used as a Recording source must be activated and selected.
  • Tone generators for white , pink and brown noise , swept sine, square, sawtooth signals, DTMF tones, metronome clicks, etc.
  • Audio recording (e.g. from turntable) as many channels as the hardware supports:
    • Record directly to the hard drive
    • Simultaneous playback
    • Level triggering for automatic start of recording
  • Text track for marking and selecting track sections
  • Time track for the pitch-preserving adjustment of the playback speed over the running time
  • Display of the digital audio tracks in stereo or mono as
  • Audio playback in the downmix of all tracks to only two channels (stereo), whereby the volume distribution (pan) can only be set for the entire length of a channel.
  • Basic editing functions such as selecting, moving the selected region to zero crossings, cutting, copying, trimming, splitting into two tracks, changing volume over the running time
  • Analysis functions, e.g. B. for the (statistical) frequency analysis, tempo ( BPM ) and for evaluating how far a speech signal differs from the background soundtrack
  • Several hundred filters and sound effects or effect plug-ins :

Audacity cannot implement its effects and analysis functions in real time , and navigation in the tracks with scrubbing is not available either. Compared to commercial products, there are no mechanisms for aurally supported navigation and selection.

As of version 1.3.1, Audacity behaves portable if the program file finds a subdirectory “Portable Settings” in its directory.
