Audio editor

Audio editor from Ubuntu Studio

Audio editors are application programs with which audio signals can be recorded, edited and played back digitally via sound cards or connected analog and digital interfaces .

function

Audio editors can read, play, edit, analyze and convert audio files from storage media (hard drives, optical data carriers, memory cards, USB sticks, etc.) in the audio formats supported by the audio editor (depending on the respective functional scope). They are therefore very helpful in sound design .

Professional programs come close to a virtual recording studio with a wide range of editing options, such as adding effects and filters, changing pitch, volume and speed as well as mastering functions, e.g. compressing using a compressor . Some also allow you to burn CDs and DVDs .

Audio editors are not to be confused with software sequencers , in which one can organize the already edited sounds in tracks and thus arrange a piece of music . Most of the time, however, sequencers also have integrated simple audio editor functions.

Due to the favorable price / performance ratio compared to conventional processing options in recording studios Audio editors were once primarily in the leisure sector ( home recording ) and in the semi-professional range used. Since around 1995 they have also been opening up the professional sector because of their ease of use and their constantly increasing quality.

Professional musicians who use audio editors include Rick Wakeman of Yes , Bobby Kimball of Toto, and Mike Oldfield .
