Logic [ lɑːdʒɪk ] is a digital audio workstation (DAW) and software - audio and MIDI sequencer the manufacturer Apple .

The program distinguishes between several types of tracks: including MIDI , audio , film , plug-in and mixer automation tracks . Logic was available as a Pro or an Express version. The latter differed from the Pro version in terms of price and functionality. At the moment, however, Apple only sells the Pro version.

Up to version "Logic 6" the software was developed by the German company Emagic . Apple took over Emagic in 2002 and stopped developing Logic for the Windows operating system . Since then, Logic has only been available for macOS . The last version that can be operated under Windows is Logic 5.5.1. While version 6 was still called Emagic, Logic from version 7 is officially an Apple product.

In addition, Apple merged more than 20 Emagic products, including all instruments and effects plug-ins, the CD authoring software "Waveburner Pro" and the Pro Tools TDM support package , and named this single product "Logic Pro".

functionality

Logic provides functions for recording , editing, mixing and notation of music . In addition to the recording functions for MIDI and audio, there are also audio effects plugins and an integrated sample library, the so-called Apple Loops (from version 7) and more.

In Logic, MIDI, audio and parameter data can be recorded in the form of sequences (regions) and graphically arranged on tracks . The tracks are processed further with the help of virtual mixing consoles that can be configured individually. MIDI audio tracks can also be exported. In the so-called environment , all audio and MIDI devices can be configured and adapted to the needs of the user. Using freely configurable keyboard commands, almost all functions of the program can be carried out without a mouse.

A whole range of virtual effect devices ( plug-ins ) are available for audio processing . In addition to modulation effects such as B. Chorus, Phaser , Flanger and Ensemble, dynamics processors such. B. Compressor , limiter , gate and expander and various delays Logic also offers a convolution reverb (Space Designer) and a vocoder (EVOC20). Logic also offers various virtual synthesizers (ES1, ES2, EFM1, Sculpture), samplers (EXS24), emulations of electromechanical instruments such as Fender Rhodes , Hammond B3 or Hohner Clavinet D6 (EVP88, EVB3, EVD6), as well as a virtual drum computer with integrated step Sequencer (Ultrabeat). In Version 7, or Logic Pro 7.2 include a guitar - amp simulation (Guitar Amp Pro) and a bass amplifier simulation (bass amp) new. As of version 7, loops and software instruments that were created for Apple's entry-level music program GarageBand can also be integrated. Apple has now released five extensive jam packs with loops and samples, which can therefore also be used in Logic.
The Logic 8 version released in September has been expanded to include a complex multi-tap delay ( Delay Designer ) and new types of compressors. The program was also adapted to the requirements of the increasingly widespread 5.1 surround format and equipped with the corresponding functions for spatializing sounds.

Logic can be expanded with additional sound generator and effect plug-ins from other manufacturers. Up to the last version Logic 6 Pro, the VST interface was supported under OS 9 ; with the first version of 6 that ran under OS X, VST was replaced by the AU ( audio unit ) interface . This interface has now established itself among plug-in manufacturers, and AU is offered in parallel to the VST interface. If necessary, however, VST plugins can be converted to AU with the additional program from Fxpansion, "VST-AU-Adapter".

From version 7, Logic includes, in addition to equal tuning , the option of using various fixed tunings (historical and self-defined) and the dynamic tuning system Hermode Tuning (HMT) for the internal audio instruments.

Logic file extensions are mainly .LSO

Logic Studio / Logic Pro 8

Since 2008 Apple has been launching a software package consisting of Logic 8 / MainStage / Soundtrack Pro and a now integrated Waveburner . Thanks to the new one-window concept , the entire software can now be operated from one window, although the old method of working with multiple windows (screensets) is still possible. A number of plug-ins have been improved and expanded to include stereo or surround use. The "Space Designer" (digital reverb, based on impulse responses) now enables true stereo instead of just mono to stereo and has been expanded to include a library of surround impulse responses. Complete sample sets can be loaded into the Ultrabeat. Post-pan send controls have been added in the mixer section. The new CAF format eliminates the file size that was previously limited to 4 GB. The supplied samples and instruments can be conveniently listened to and integrated in advance using the media browser.

Logic Studio / Logic Pro 9

In the summer of 2009, Apple released the update to the software package described above with Logic 9 (significantly better processor load distribution for multi-core processors, improved node operation via Ethernet, improved import of projects in "songs", "flex time function", "bounce to track", Guitar amplifier plug-in (Amp Designer) and pedalboard plug-in). Since version 9.1.1 you can use Logic Pro without restrictions in 64-bit mode . At the same time it was announced that Logic Pro no longer supports the Pro Tools TDM system from Avid until further notice .

Logic Studio / Logic Pro X

On July 16, 2013, Logic Pro X was introduced by Apple. According to the official website, there are now innovations in which the plug-in libraries have been expanded and new plug-ins have been added. In addition, the entire user interface has changed so that the software now appears in a dark gray.

Innovations

Logic Pro X

  • Flex Time: Flex Time is a collection of functions for quickly editing timing and tempo. This allows audio to be edited without cutting.
  • Production tool: With the new production tools, musicians can edit any part of a recording, cut or mix.
  • Guitar equipment: Amps, EQs, reverbs, loudspeaker boxes and microphones can be freely combined and processed with a new collection of “stomp boxes”.
  • Main Stage 3: With MainStage 3 (standalone software), all instruments and effects are available on stage that were also used during the recording. The program also adds a virtual player for the background track and a live loop recorder.

copy protection

Since 2012, Logic has only been available from the AppStore from 10.6 and can therefore be used on up to five Macs at the same time. Logic was previously protected against unauthorized duplication ( black copying ) by entering a serial number and, according to the instructions, could be installed on a desktop and a mobile Mac. A dongle is no longer required. In contrast to a new installation, however, an update requires synchronization with the dongle.
