Emagic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emagic was a major independent manufacturer of hardware and software for music production based in Rellingen near Hamburg .

Emagic Soft- und Hardware GmbH was founded in September 1992 by Sven Junge (Managing Director), who was still called Kindel at the time, Chris Adam (Managing Director Development) and Gerhard Lengeling (Development Manager ). Lengeling and Adam had previously developed the Scoretrack and Supertrack programs for the Commodore 64 at C-LAB , and then Creator and Notator SL for the Atari ST . Under the new company, they released Notator Logic for Atari ST and Mac in 1993 , and later also for Microsoft Windows . The product name was eventually shortened to Logic .

In 1994, the American subsidiary Emagic Inc. was founded in Grass Valley (California) .

On July 1, 2002, Emagic was acquired by Apple Computer . The development of the product versions for Microsoft Windows was stopped shortly afterwards. Since then, Logic has only been continued for Apple Macintosh . Hardware development was almost given up. Almost all software instruments offered were integrated directly into Logic, which drastically reduced the number of software products to Logic Pro for professional users and Logic Express for users who do not need all professional functions. From version 7 (2004) the brand name Emagic has been replaced by Apple. Both program variants are compatible with GarageBand , Apple's music software for beginners.

Employee

At its peak, Emagic employed over 90 people, about a third of whom were highly skilled development engineers. Some key figures were:

  • Michael Haydn , who had already developed editor / librarian software for C-LAB (Explorer 32, PolyFrame). He followed Lengeling and Adam with the affiliated PolyFrame development team to Emagic and was responsible for SoundSurfer and SoundDiver.
  • The DSP expert Steffan Diedrichsen has developed practically all Logic plug-ins since 1998, including the ES1 software synthesizer and the EVP88 electric piano. These were initially sold individually.
  • Under the leadership of sales experts Ruthven Martinus and John F. Voss , the company grew rapidly to become a permanent fixture in the international music industry before it was taken over by Apple Inc. Richard Moisan was Head of Emagic Incorporated in the United States; Nikolaus Brocke was Marketing Manager.

After the takeover by Apple Inc. Richard Moisan, Ruthven Martinus and John F. Voss were part of the team commissioned by Apple Management to integrate Emagic GmbH and Emagic Inc. into the Apple Group.
