Ardor is software for editing and mixing audio recordings on the computer ( see also audio editor , hard disk recording and digital audio workstation ). Its interface and operation are based on Pro Tools , a software that is often used in recording studios . Ardor is intended for professional use and is available as free software under the GPL . There are currently executable versions of this program for the Linux , Solaris , FreeBSD , macOS and Windows operating systems . The work of the Ardor developers focuses on the versions for Linux and OS X. Paul Davis is considered to be the founder of Ardor. According to its own statement, the Ardor project has set itself the goal of creating the "best possible digital audio processing platform ".

The name "Ardor" comes from the attempt to pronounce the abbreviation HDR (for Hard Disk Recorder ).

concept

Ardor uses the JACK Audio Connection Kit to record and pass on sounds. This means that the software can create sound recordings both from the inputs of a sound card and from software connected to the jack server. The number of tracks that can be used simultaneously is not strictly limited. Ardor saves the recordings in files in RIFF-WAVE format. Ardor does not change these files after recording. All cuts and other processing of the audio material relate to the playback of the file. This so-called non-destructive procedure allows cuts and most deletions to be undone, even across session boundaries.

The user controls recording and playback in Ardor via “tracks”, which are based on the individual tracks of a tape machine, and via a mixer. All parameter changes in the mixer can be automated. It is possible to let the volume of a track swell at any point or to let an effect become stronger at one point and then weaker again. This programming of parameters is also possible with the help of graphical curves that can be displayed under the track. All these processes happen in real time - the unavoidable delay time can be set in the jack server. Delay times of less than 10 milliseconds can be used stably on a system correctly configured for the operation of Jack.

Interaction with other programs

Ardor supports VST, LADSPA, LV2 and LXVST for instrument and effects plug-ins . Several of these mostly very special plugins can be combined to achieve more complex effects. Ardor for MacOS also supports the Mac-specific AU format for plugins. A version can also be built from the source code of Ardor, which supports effect plug-ins in Steinberg VST format. For this, from version 2.8 the GPL-licensed Vestige Header, FST and Wine are used. With Wine, however, Ardor can only be used as a 32- bit program or in a multilib environment.

For video dubbing, the program xjadeo is available under Linux, which makes it possible to run a film synchronously with Ardor. For MIDI recordings, Ardor can be synchronized with a sequencer such as Rosegarden via the timer on the Jack server. In the network of the jack server, sounds from software sound generators such as software synthesizers , samplers or players can also be recorded directly on individual tracks by Ardor. Via MIDI, Ardor can be operated with external mixers and control consoles (so-called DAW controllers). The output of Jack can be used for audio mastering with suitable processor software such as B. Connect JAMin .

Versions

Version 3 of Ardor was released in March 2013. In addition to various detailed improvements, this also brought the integration of MIDI tracks directly into the program, which users often wanted. The project has since sold installation packages for Linux on its website according to a model in which the buyer can set a price of over USD 1 himself. Packages for OS X and Windows were planned.

On April 19, 2015, the release of Ardor 4.0 was announced. This major release enabled experimental support for Microsoft Windows from version XP for the first time . In order to make it easier for new users to get started, the JACK audio daemon has been transparently integrated. In addition, the software has been optimized in terms of memory usage, MIDI support has been improved and the user interface has been completely rewritten. The compatibility of the themes from version 3.0 or older has been discontinued.

On August 12, 2016, Ardor 5.0 was released. This new version now officially runs under Microsoft Windows . Compared to Ardor 4, numerous details of the operation have been modified and errors have been corrected. The options for using effect plugins have been expanded.

Ardor 6.0 was released on May 24, 2020. According to the developers, the integration of plugins and MIDI files, the latency behavior and the processing of different playback speeds have been improved and large parts of the source code have been revised.
