LV2 is a programming interface for audio plug-ins for communication between host applications, audio effects and filters under Linux . LV2 is the successor to the Linux Audio Developer's Simple Plugin API (LADSPA). LV2 also replaces the DSSI interface for integrating virtual instruments . The source code is provided under the ISCL .

While the predecessor LADSPA could only be used as a filter or static sound generator due to the lack of a MIDI event controller, LV2 can also be used to send notes and controller events to virtual sound generators such as synthesizers and samplers . Individual graphical interfaces for the individual plug-ins are also enabled under LV2. Thus LV2 includes similar functionality to proprietary Virtual Studio Technology by Steinberg under Windows and Mac OS .

The specification of the interface is currently under development and changes are to be expected. However, some developers are already working on porting existing plug-ins to the new standard and testing them.
