ISC license

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ISC license or ISCL for short is a license for open source software from the ISC . It is a modified version of the "2-Clause" BSD license , a BSD license that only contains the first two paragraphs. The modification consists of removing those parts that are unnecessary by the revised version of the Berne Convention of 1971. In this, the protection of the original work also applies to translations, which corresponds to the compilation of the source code . A distinction between source code and binary code is therefore superfluous.

The license was originally created for the Internet Systems Consortium's own software developments such as BIND , but is also used as a preferred license by other projects, in particular OpenBSD .

It consists exclusively of the copyright notice, permission for unrestricted use and a disclaimer :

Copyright (c) Jahr (vierstellig), Name der Firma oder Person
Permission to use, copy, modify, and/or distribute this software for any
purpose with or without fee is hereby granted, provided that the above
copyright notice and this permission notice appear in all copies.
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND THE AUTHOR DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES
WITH REGARD TO THIS SOFTWARE INCLUDING ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHOR BE LIABLE FOR
ANY SPECIAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OR ANY DAMAGES
WHATSOEVER RESULTING FROM LOSS OF USE, DATA OR PROFITS, WHETHER IN AN
ACTION OF CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE OR OTHER TORTIOUS ACTION, ARISING OUT OF
OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE USE OR PERFORMANCE OF THIS SOFTWARE.

As a result, the ISC license offers most of the public domain freedoms for a copyrighted work. The license has been recognized by both the Open Source Initiative and the Free Software Foundation after the and in the first sentence was changed to and / or , and is compatible with the GPL .
