Cloud Rap is a form of hip hop created in 2009 , which is characterized by spherical synthesizer sounds and the use of auto tune . It originated in the United States . Cloud Rap came to Europe through artists such as Crack Ignaz , Yung Hurn (both Austria ), LGoony ( Germany ) as well as Yung Lean and PNL .

Musical characteristics

Even if Cloud Rap does not yet have a fixed definition and is understood by some protagonists as a feeling rather than a music style, there are musical similarities that are based on the genre's origins, with European and US styles differing in particular through the textual Distinguish alignment.

As an alternative to the rather brutal trap or the down south , cloud rap dispenses with party-oriented sounds. Instead, synthesizers are used in order to use flat and slow passages as a basic framework for the music. Alternative artists such as Björk and Imogen Heap are also sampled . The rap style is shaped by the massive use of Antares Auto-Tune or comparable programs. The name Cloud Rap comes from the original portal of the genre, which bears the name "Soundcloud". The first cloud rap titles were uploaded there. Lyrically, especially in the United States, people distanced themselves from gangsta rap and used abstract word images, metaphors and more thought-provoking texts that deal with emotional and philosophical problems.

In contrast to this, there are often productions in German-speaking cloud rap that remain rooted in gangsta rap lyrics and deal with drugs, money and women, but which are deliberately exaggerated in an ironic way. Also, rather senseless freestyle texts emerged. Minimal music is also used musically , in some cases elements of the trap. They also use so-called ad-libs, small clips like “Sheesh!” Or “Skreet!”, Which come from the Down South and are also popular in the trap. Many artists also have a certain DIY ethic in common. So instrumental pieces are partly obtained from free file sharing sites or produced in-house. Videos and often unfinished songs are distributed via Soundcloud and YouTube . The genre lost its originally non-profit orientation with free albums after the first commercial releases.

Style history

The 2009 album 6 Kiss by American rapper Lil B set the tone . His song I'm God is often referred to as the basic draft of the genre. Further developments were made by the music producer Clams Casino, who produced for Main Attrakionz, G-Side and A $ AP Rocky , among others . The genre spread throughout Europe from 2012 onwards, with the Swede Yung Lean and his group Sad Boys pioneering this . The style also became popular in German-speaking countries. Well-known representatives here are Yung Hurn and Crack Ignaz from Austria and LGoony from Cologne. In 2007, Snoop Dogg released the Spavish song Sensual Seduction , which at the time had no influence on the hip-hop scene.
