ASAP Rocky (born October 3, 1988 in New York ; real name Rakim Athelaston Mayers ), stylized as A $ AP Rocky , is an American rapper , producer and actor . He is a member of the hip-hop collective A $ AP Mob, which u. a. was founded by his longstanding mentor, A $ AP Yams.

Life

Childhood and youth

A $ AP Rocky was born Rakim Mayers on October 3rd, 1988 in Harlem . It was named after the rapper Rakim , who was an idol for his mother.

When he was eight, he began rapping what he had learned from his brother. In the same year he moved to Pennsylvania with his family . When Mayers was twelve years old, his father ended up in jail for drug deals. Because of this, the mother decided to move to North Carolina with his family . As homeless, they found refuge there in women's shelters . To live in familiar surroundings again, the family moved back to Harlem.

At the age of 13, his older brother Ricky was shot dead in the back street of his apartment building. Death was crucial for him to take rapping seriously. In the following years he lived with his mother and sister in various women's shelters. He attended Bayard Rustin High School for the Humanities in Chelsea . To escape the poor conditions, Mayers began to deal in drugs. He started out selling marijuana, and when he was 15, he expanded his crack business in the Bronx . He was arrested for the first time in 2004 and spent two weeks on Rikers Island , where he shared a cell with rapper Casanova . In favor of his career, however, he decided at the age of 22 to stop drug trafficking.

Beginning of the rap career

Since 2007 he has been part of the ASAP Mob , the acronym stands for "Always Strive and Prosper", or ASAP for short, a hip-hop collective from Harlem. This is how his final rapper name, ASAP Rocky, came about. Other well-known rappers from this collective are ASAP Ferg , ASAP Bari and his cousin ASAP Nast .

In 2011 he released his first single, Purple Swag, which quickly became a popular street song . This was followed by the single Peso , which Hot 97 played frequently. This was followed by a music video for Purple Swag that made him famous across the country. The mixtape Live followed. Love. A $ AP that aroused the interest of several record companies. Eventually he signed a recording deal with RCA Records and Polo Grounds Music . For this, according to several sources, he received an advance of an estimated three million US dollars for him as a solo artist and for the creation of a sub-label for the ASAP Mob. He named this label A $ AP Worldwide. He runs the label together with ASAP Yams.

Debut album and tours (2012-2014)

At the beginning of 2012, the British BBC's Sound of 2012 survey predicted the breakthrough for the coming year. From February he stood together with Kendrick Lamar as support for Drake on his club tour Paradise. With his single Peso , he placed 75th in the US R&B charts for the first time in March.

A big gig on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon was announced for July 20th. But ASAP Rocky got into a physical argument with the artist iRome the night before and was imprisoned. He was allowed to make up for the gig on August 21st. Also in July 2012, he was seen by a man in New York City doing drugs while shopping. He attacked the man. He also attacked two photographers who took photos of the incident. After his arrest, he was released on payment of compensation to the photographers and an admission of guilt.

On September 6, he performed with Rihanna at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards . A collaboration with the three successful rappers Drake , 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar brought him his breakthrough on the Billboard Hot 100 with the title Fuckin 'Problems in November 2012 .

On January 15, 2013, his debut album Long.Live.A $ AP was released , which entered the international charts and reached number 1 on the Billboard 200 . In the same year he released the mixtape Lords Never Worry as a free download with A $ AP Mob . He toured the United States from September to November. In addition to his crew, Schoolboy Q and Danny Brown played in the opening act.

On August 31, 2013, during the Budweiser Made in America festival, he hit a woman who later sued him. An indictment before the criminal court did not materialize because the witness did not appear at the court hearing. The lawsuit before the civil court was settled out of court.

Second album (2015-2017)

A $ AP Rocky played a cameo in the indie film Dope , which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2015 .

On March 16, 2015, when his album went gold for more than 250,000 albums sold in the United States , Mayers announced the release of his second studio album, At.Long.Last.A $ AP ( ALLA for short ), in May 2015. In February 2015 he named rapper Juicy J , producer Danger Mouse and himself and his recently deceased mentor ASAP Yams as executive producer of the album .

On May 26, 2015, he released his album At.Long.Last.A $ AP (ALLA), which contained 18 songs, including the previously released singles Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2 (LPFJ2) and M '$ , but not the song Multiply with Juicy J . Like its predecessor, it reached number 1 on the US Billboard charts.

On June 11, 2015, he appeared with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show, where the artists presented L $ D together. This was followed by the song Good for You as a guest contribution for Selena Gomez , which became an international hit. Further guest contributions for Lana Del Rey , Alicia Keys and Famous Dex followed.

Third album and arrest in Sweden (2018-present)

On February 16, 2018, the single Cocky was released together with Gucci Mane and 21 Savage for the film Uncle Drew . In preparation for his next album, he also released the singles Bad Company (feat. BlocBoy JB ) and ASAP Forever (feat. Moby ). He also worked on a single for Thirty Seconds to Mars .

His third studio album Testing was released on May 25, 2018. The album did not reach number 1 in the United States for the first time and was only placed at number 4. Sales were also far from the two previous albums. In late 2018, a collaboration album with Tyler, the Creator was announced, but it never came out and, according to Tyler, the Creator, never existed.

In July 2019, Mayers was provisionally arrested in Stockholm on charges of serious bodily harm. He and his entourage were involved in a brawl on June 30, 2019. Mayers and two of his companions are said to have hit and kicked a young man when he was lying on the ground. The arrest led to his ongoing European tour being canceled. US President Donald Trump stepped in and commented on Twitter on July 19, 2019: “I just spoke to Kanye West about the detention of his friend A $ AP Rocky. I will call the very talented Swedish Prime Minister to see what we can do. "

Even Kim Kardashian and other celebrities went public one for the singer. The manager of A $ AP Rocky spoke of the inhumane conditions in the detention conditions. The US State Department expressed its concerns through a spokeswoman and urged Sweden to act “fairly and respectfully”. Shortly afterwards, the pretrial detention was extended by a week at the request of the public prosecutor. As a result, ASAP Rocky had to cancel his appearance at the Splash Festival . Others

In 2011 he had a relationship with the Australian rapper Iggy Azalea , who got a tattoo with the lettering of the mixtape Live.Love.A $ AP . The relationship between the two did not last, however, and Azalea had the "A $ AP" crossed off on her fingers.
