Monster is an American drama directed by Anthony Mandler that premiered on January 22, 2018 at the Sundance Film Festival , where the film was screened in the US Dramatic Competition. It is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Walter Dean Myers .

Because Steve Harmon, a black youth, is accused of being involved in a robbery, he is sent to a New York detention center. Steve was not involved in the act, however. The upcoming trial will determine whether the teenager will have to stay in prison for the rest of their life. Those involved in the trial wonder whether he really is the “monster” the prosecutor describes him as, or whether he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The film is based on the 1999 Harpercollins novel Monster by the American youth author Walter Dean Myers who died in July 2014 . In the year of publication, Myers was nominated for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature for his work and received the Michael L. Printz Award the following year . He wrote the book as a mixture of a diary, written by his protagonist Steve Harmon, and a third-person perspective in the form of a film script about the court hearings. In this way, Steve reflects on his life from an unusual perspective. Myers was kicked out of high school and joined the US Army at the age of 17. The book was recommended for the Abitur 2017 and 2018 in Germany, including in Berlin.
