action

The film sets in after the fall of civilization in a post-apocalyptic world in which an unknown virus attacks people and animals. The life of a family is portrayed that consists of the father Paul, his wife Sarah, their son Travis and the family grandfather Bud, who live together in a remote house in a forest. In addition to being isolated from the rest of the world, the family is plagued by great perplexity as Bud has been infected by the virus. The spreading disease manifests itself through symptoms such as boils on the skin and black eyes and apparently ends in an excruciating death. With the help of a protective mask and gloves, however, you seem to be able to prevent infection. After a long struggle, the family decides to redeem Bud and then cremate the body. Not only grief affects the family, the uninfected in this world also live in constant fear of becoming infected themselves.

One night the family notices that someone is trying to break into their home. After Paul has overpowered the burglar, he first ties him to a tree so as not to take any chances. The next day, in a conversation between Paul and the stranger named Will, it turns out that he was looking for water and food for his wife and son, who live not far away. After discussing advantages such as the pooling of resources and increased defense capabilities, as well as disadvantages such as a potential risk of infection, Paul, Sarah and Travis decide to take the strangers into the house. On the way, Paul and Will are attacked by two armed men, but Paul fends off the attackers and kills them.

Back at Paul's house, Will, his wife Kim and their son Andrew are welcomed warmly. However, Paul makes it clear that there are strict rules that the newcomers have to obey. The interpersonal interaction with one another initially creates a harmonious coexistence. However, the fear of the virus and the disease that is spreading remains. One evening, however, Paul catches Will telling a lie and becomes increasingly suspicious.

Later Stanley, Travis's dog, seems to smell something in the forest and runs away. Travis, Will and Paul pursue him, but lose sight of him and cannot find him because the barking suddenly stops. The following night, Travis wakes up from a nightmare and finds Andrew asleep in Bud's old room. He accompanies him back to his parents' room. Then he hears a noise at the door, which he finds open. He alerts the others who find Stanley fatally injured in the entrance area. As with Bud, they cremate Stanley's body.

When Travis notes that the door was open when he arrived and that he found Andrew in another room, Sarah asks if Andrew is sleepwalking. Kim rejects this and tensions between the families rise. Paul suggests that they isolate themselves in two separate rooms for a few days to make sure no one is infected.

The next morning, Travis hears Andrew cough heavily and Kim say they have to leave the house. Travis informs his parents about this and fears that he is also infected because he has touched Andrew the night before. Paul and Sarah put on protective clothing and arm themselves because they fear Kim and Will might steal their supplies. When Paul wants to see and examine Andrew, Will draws a gun and threatens him. He orders Andrew to keep his eyes closed and asks for a fair share of provisions. But Paul and Sarah manage to overpower Will and kick the others out of the house. When Will attacks Paul outside and hits him, Sarah shoots him. Thereupon Kim tries to escape into the forest with Andrew, but Paul shoots the escaping people and kills them.

A little later Travis wakes up seriously ill in bed and is comforted by Sarah. In the final scene, Paul and Sarah sit at the table, visibly worn out and in silence without Travis.

production

Staff and cast

Directed by Trey Edward Shults , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Shults had processed his own experiences with the film: “That comes from the loss of my father. What Sarah tells her father in the opening scene, I told my father on his deathbed. He was scared and full of remorse and didn't want to let go. That was a traumatic experience that changed my life. Two months later I wrote the script and it just flowed out of me. It was done in three days. ”Shults shows the events from the perspective of Paul and Sarah's son Travis over long distances.

Joel Edgerton plays the family man Paul, Carmen Ejogo his wife Sarah and Kelvin Harrison their son Travis. Christopher Abbott plays the father of the second family Will, Riley Keough his wife Kim and Griffin Robert Faulkner their son Andrew. Travis' dog Stanley is a dog with a personality all of its own, according to the director.

reception

Film genre and age rating

The genre explains Simon Scholl of PC Games , It Comes at Night as a pure horror film to classify, would clearly fall short: "Although there are some strong horror passages, but over time the plot develops more and more of a social Drama in which humanity plays a central role during the apocalypse . That works relatively well and gives the whole thing an extra layer of meaning. Nevertheless, a lot of the really great shower potential from the beginning remains unused. "

Also Antje Wessels noted in their criticism that the film is not a horror shocker as suggeriere the trailer, and said: "Not just any monster being is pure evil, but the cornered man." The film does not points above lurid Jump Scares , Wessels continues, but above all about an oppressive chamber play atmosphere that can easily come to a head without "it" actually coming at night.

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is characterized by an intense, almost constantly tense and threatening atmosphere. Again and again there are scenes of violence and killing, but they are not played out. Young people from the age of 16 are able to see through the plot as an unreal horror story and to classify the events accordingly. "

Reviews and grossing results

The film has so far won over 88 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics . As part of the 2017 Golden Tomato Awards , the film came out third in the Best Horror Movie category .

Trey Edward Shults directed and scripted the film

Antje Wessels remarks onquotemeter.de that the marketing of the film had given the wrong impression and that it was not a horror shocker, as suggested in the trailer: "Fast cuts, a booming soundtrack and the hint of explicit image material should suggest a hysterical horror ripper, but am In the end, It Comes at Night is rather a kind of hybrid of the thriller chamber play 10 Cloverfield Lane and M. Night Shyamalan's ambiguous Twistride The Village , although this comparison does not provide any information about the outcome of the story. “The film is atmospherically dense and emotionally demanding Wessels continues, which results in a highly exciting, unexcited and no less demanding mind game that makes the spectator's pulse skyrocket without any blood or monsters. Wessels also remarks that individual narrative fragments at best give an idea of what civilization once wiped out and under what conditions the last remaining ones from the worst-case scenario now have to live. Wessels notices the tactics with uncertainty, but also criticizes the fact that the internal logic of the film is not always respected and the viewer sometimes has to turn a blind eye in order to be able to place what is shown credibly in context. Wessels says of cameraman Drew Daniels that his paralyzing work qualifies him as one of the best in the younger genre. For his part, the film composer Brian McOmber produced such restrained music that the meaningful soundtrack made up of strange noises and eerie sounds comes into its own even more. Wessels sums up, in this combination It Comes at Night maltreats the nerves of the audience even without jump scares.

Brian Tallerico, a critic of Roger Ebert , says that while the film doesn't have zombies in the streets, bastards in the basement or witches in the woods, it is still one of the scariest films in years.

In his review of the film, Simon Scholl from PC Games sums up: "Ambitious and worthwhile horror drama, but which would have liked to focus more on its core competencies."

The worldwide revenue from cinema screenings so far amounts to approximately 19.3 million US dollars.
