Heinrich I. von Scharfenberg
Heinrich I von Scharfenberg (* around 1050; † December 29, 1072 in Speyer ) was the 31st Bishop of Speyer from 1067 until his death .
Life
Heinrich came from the family of the Lords of Scharfenberg, a southwest German ministerial family from the area of the Reichsburg Trifels in the southern Palatinate. Scharfenberg Castle later became the family seat . He was a childhood friend of King Heinrich IV and was appointed Bishop of Speyer in 1067 - still a minor - after he had been a canon at the Goslar monastery.
When taking possession of the diocese, the people of Speyer paid little respect to the young bishop. It soon became apparent that Heinrich was a pleasure-seeking spendthrift who squandered the church property unchecked. On August 15, 1071, Heinrich took part in a synod in Mainz at which the dismissal of the bishop of Constance , Karl , who was accused of simony , was negotiated and he was forced to abdicate.
According to a contemporary chronicler, Lambert von Aschaffenburg , Heinrich died before midnight on December 29th after suffering an attack of suffocation at Vespers . Remling dates Heinrich's death to the year 1072 on the basis of documents from his successor Rüdiger called Huzmann .
