Jesse (Speyer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jesse lived in the 4th century and is the first known bishop of the Speyer diocese . It was handed down long before the other bishops of the diocese and therefore outside the contiguous list of bishops . Very little is known about his life.

Sources

On the basis of two sources, Jesse is assumed to be the first verifiable Bishop of Speyer:

The name Jesse appears in a list of Gaulish-Rhenish bishops (342/343) who agreed to the resolutions of a synod in Sardica (Latin name of the city of Sofia ). However, it is not known which bishopric he held.

A bishopric in the Civitas Nemetum (Latin name of the city of Speyer ) is assumed for the middle of the 4th century , since the signature Jesse ep (iscopu) s civitatis Nemetum for the year 346 can be found in a file for a council in Cologne . Although this file is considered a forgery, the list of signatures was probably taken from a real template.
