Walter von Speyer

Walter von Speyer (* probably 963; † December 3, 1027, probably in Speyer ) was Bishop of Speyer from 1006 to 1027.

According to Franz Xaver Remling , Walter von Speyer is known for his poetry and became a Speyer bishop and court chaplain of Otto III. identified. The works Vita et Passio sancti Christophori and Libellus De Studio Poete, Qui Et Scolasticus have been handed down . Two letters to the Quedlinburg nun Hazecha have also been received. A contract dated April 7, 1024 is the oldest surviving document from a bishop of Speyer. It bears the first surviving episcopal seal and, through the signatures of the witnesses, contains important information about the ruling structure of that time. During his time as bishop, the Speyer Cathedral School gained supraregional importance.
