Jharrel Jerome (born October 9, 1997 ) is an American film actor .

life and career

Jharrel Jerome grew up in the Bronx and attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York , where he received leading roles in the plays The Laramie Project and In the Heights . Jerome later began a bachelor's degree in acting at the Ithaca College Department of Theater Arts. During his studies he played a minor role in the play The Others , which, among other things, deals with the disadvantage of African Americans and the question of social justice. In the short film Wheels by Spencer Muhlstock, Jerome was the only actor to play a wheelchair user who can stand up again at the end of the film. Jerome also acted as the narrator in this film.

The audition for his first feature film Moonlight by Barry Jenkins , who won an Oscar later, took place on his 18th birthday. Jerome took 12 days off from Ithaca College for the shooting, which took place in Miami . In the film, which premiered on September 2, 2016 at the Telluride Film Festival , Jerome plays the 16-year-old Kevin. When La La Land was announced as Best Picture at the Academy Awards , but then received the award after a mistake was discovered by Moonlight , Jerome took the stage with the film staff and his fellow actors.

The film Monster was presented at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018 . Also in 2018 came the film First Match of Olivia Newman in theaters, in which he plays Omari. Jerome also got a role in the television series Mr. Mercedes , which first aired on August 9, 2017. He also got a leading role in the film Selah and the Spades by Tayarisha Poe , which was presented at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019 .

In the miniseries When They See Us Jerome played the role of Korey Wise, one of the " Central Park Five " who are said to have brutally beaten and raped a jogger in Central Park in 1989, but were innocent. The series was released in May 2019 and received good reviews. For this role in the miniseries, Jerome received the Best Actor Actor award at the 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards .

In several interviews Jerome called the actor Denzel Washington his great idol. He had actually met him at several award ceremonies.
