Magnetic schools are schools that are characterized by a special focus in their curriculum or a special educational concept , as well as by an extended catchment area with free choice of school.

origin

The concept of the magnet school was established in several major North American cities in the 1970s. The aim was to make inner-city schools more attractive through a special focus. The catchment area was expanded beyond the boundaries of individual city districts. This should lead to a more balanced ethnic and social composition of the student body and to an improvement in the quality of the school system. White families in particular should be encouraged to no longer send their children to private schools , but rather to public schools in the form of magnet schools based on their interests .

Magnet schools in Germany

Magnet schools with different profiles have already been set up in several German cities. They are characterized by their collaboration with companies and research. This makes it easier for schoolchildren to start their training and professional life. Through the increased involvement of parents and the support of students from different nations, they promote the integration of foreign families. The number of magnet schools is to be increased. 1000 magnetic schools are to be created at around 700 locations, focusing on art , technology , foreign languages or an educational concept.
