history
2011–2012: foundation and first successes
In May 2011, during a business seminar at Stanford University , Lee Soo-man announced the idea of debuting a new boy band that would be split into two subgroups, each performing the same songs in South Korea and China. After many changes, Lee Soo-man finally decided on the name of the new group in December 2011: EXO, inspired by the word exoplanet . EXO is divided into EXO-K (“K” for Korean ) for South Korea and EXO-M (“M” for Mandarin ) for China. Her first TV appearance was on December 29, 2011 on SBS 'annual Gayo Daejeon .
In late January, the group released their first single, What Is Love , which reached # 88 on the Gaon Singles Chart. The second single called History was released on March 9th. It reached number 68 on the Gaon Singles Chart and number 6 on the Sina Music Charts. On March 31, the group played their first concert with 3,000 spectators at the Seoul Olympic Stadium.
Both subgroups made their debut on April 8th with the album Mama . On that day, EXO-K appeared on The Music Trend music show , while EXO-M appeared on China's Top Chinese Music Awards with the same song . The Chinese version of Mama reached # 1 on the Sina Albums Chart, while the Korean version reached # 3 on the Gaon Album Charts and # 8 on the Billboards World Albums Chart.
In November, EXO won the award for "Best New Asian Artist" at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2012. EXO-K received three nominations for the 27th Golden Disk Awards, where they received the Newcomer Award. In addition, EXO-M won the award for the most popular group at the Top Chinese Music Awards 2014.
2013–2014: First studio album XOXO and first internal conflicts
EXO gained great fame through their first album XOXO (2013), which was released on June 3rd. The album was jointly promoted by both groups in South Korea. While Wolf was recorded together, the remaining recordings were made separately. Both versions reached # 1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart.
The repackage version of XOXO called Growl was released on August 5th and contained three additional songs. Growl reached No. 3 on Billboard's Korea K-Pop Hot 100 and No. 2 on Gaon's Singles Chart. Since December 2013, all versions of XOXO have been sold more than 1 million times. EXO became the first Korean artist in 12 years to achieve this goal.
At the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2013, XOXO was crowned album of the year. XOXO is the best-selling album of 2013 in South Korea. The album won the Disk Daesang Award in several award shows such as B. the Golden Disk Award.
The second EP called Miracles in December was released on December 9th. Starting November 28th, EXO's Reality Show Showtime was broadcast on MBC Every 1 . In 2013 alone, EXO had six albums in the annual Gaon Top 10 best-selling albums, including all versions of XOXO and their debut EP Mama.
The third EP called Overdose was released on May 7th, 2014. The release was actually scheduled for April 21st. However, the date was postponed due to the Sewol disaster. The album became the most pre-ordered mini-album in Korean music history with 660,000 pre-orders. The Korean version took number 2 on the Billboard World Albums Chart and number 129 on the Billboard 200 . Overdose became the best-selling album in 2014 in South Korea and the first mini-album to top the annual charts. Overdose was named Best Album of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2014 .
On May 24th, EXO held their first solo concert Exo from Exoplanet # 1 -The Lost Planet at the Seoul Olympic Gymnasium. The concert tickets were sold out after just 1.47 seconds.
Nevertheless, two members left the group of twelve this year. On May 15, Kris Wu filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment for being badly treated, disadvantaged and barely given vacation, resulting in severe health problems. Also Luhan filed on October 10, 2014 lawsuit against SM Entertainment one because he felt unfairly treated and left EXO after the lawsuit was annulled.
2015–2016: International success
In January 2015, the solo concert entitled Exo Planet # 2 - The Exo'luxion was announced. Five concerts took place from March 7th at the Olympic Park Stadium in Seoul. 1.2 million fans tried to buy tickets online. The second studio album called Exodus was released on March 30th. With 500,000 pre-orders in 24 hours, Exodus set a new record. The title song Call Me Baby was followed by the accompanying music video after a few days, which became the most watched music video in the first half of 2015. The Korean version of the album took number 1 in the album charts for four consecutive weeks. EXO also became the first K-pop group to hit the Canadian charts.
In total, Exodus was sold more than 1 million times and became EXO's second album after XOXO , which was able to reach this milestone. At the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2015, Exodus was crowned Album of the Year.
However, the member Tao also left the group for health reasons and therefore sued SM Entertainment on August 24, 2015 in order to terminate his contract.
