The War or THE WAR - The 4th Album (Korean Ver.) / (Chinese Ver.) Is the fourth studio album by the Korean boy group Exo . It was released digitally on July 18, 2017 under SM Entertainment . In early September the album was re-released under the name The War: The Power of Music or The Power Of Music - The 4th Album Repackage . With over 2.5 million sales, it is Exo's most successful album to date. It's Exo's first album that Lay isn't on.

Background and Marketing

SM Entertainment confirmed on June 15, 2017 that Exo will release a new studio album in mid-July 2017. About a week later, it was announced that Lay was not on the album because he was in the People's Republic of China at the time of the album production and was working on his solo projects. On July 8, 2017, Exo opened an official Instagram and Twitter user account. The album cover was presented on Instagram. Two days later the album title The War was announced. Between the 9th and the 16th the track list was announced. The War was pre-ordered over 800,000. The album and the only single Ko Ko Bop was released on July 18th. Exo thanked their fans for the pre-sales at a press conference. Two days later, Exo Ko Ko Bop and The Eve began performing in South Korean music programs. They also performed on the Music Bank World Tour in Jakarta .

At the same time as the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 , SM Entertainment published a teaser on its YouTube channel called #Total_Eclipse which announced a re-release. A week later the second teaser #Parallel_Universe and on August 29th Power # RF_05 appeared . On August 30th, The War: The Power of Music was officially announced. The album, the single Power and two other songs were released on September 5th. The album features nine songs from The War and three new ones. In mid-September, Exo performed at the Lotte Duty Free Family Festival in Seoul . At the end of November, Exo began their fourth tour Exo Planet 4 - The EℓyXiOn .

The War sold over a million copies in 24 days. The War is Exo's fourth album with over a million sales. In addition, Exo was able to place itself on one of the South Korean charts for the 7th and 8th time.
