The MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year is the main prize of the MTV Video Music Awards and has been awarded since it was first awarded in 1984 .

The only multiple winners of the award are Eminem ( The Real Slim Shady and Without Me ), Rihanna ( Umbrella and We Found Love ) and Beyoncé ( single ladies and formation ). Beyoncé and Eminem also top the list of nominations with seven nominations each.

David Lee Roth (1985), U2 (1988) and Lady Gaga (2010) achieved the feat of being nominated with two videos each in one year .
