biography
Alessia Cara grew up in Brampton , Ontario . She began to learn guitar at the age of eleven. At the age of 14, she decided to start a YouTube channel and discontinue cover versions of well-known songs. Through her interpretation of Sweater Weather from The Neighborhood , which she uploaded in 2013, she was discovered and signed by the Def Jam label . Their first production was completed in 2015. Her first release was the song Here . It contains a sample from Ike's Rap II by Isaac Hayes , which has also been used in other songs. The song was also featured on the Four Pink Walls EP , which came out in the fall. The song and EP hit the charts in Canada and the USA and here was also successfully released in Europe.
At the end of 2015, their debut album Know-It-All was released. Cara was also involved in all of the songs as a songwriter. The album reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200 . Here also made it into the top 10 and was sold over 3.5 million times by the end of 2016. In the UK, where the song had not yet appeared at the time, Alessia Cara was shortlisted for the BBC's Sound of 2016 at the end of the year . Wild Things was released as the second single and exceeded the success in their home country.
The third single, Scars to Your Beautiful, was released on July 26th, 2016. In Europe, the song became her greatest success to date, reaching the official single charts in over 15 countries. In Germany, the song climbed to number 75 and continued to climb week after week. The success was strengthened by the increased use in airplay towards the end of 2016.
In November 2016, she contributed the song How Far I'll Go to the soundtrack of the Disney animation film Vaiana - Paradise has a catch . The song hit the singles charts in Canada and the United States. On December 29, 2016, German DJ Zedd announced on Twitter that he would be working on a single with Cara. The result was the song Stay , which was released on February 24, 2017. She was also listed in Forbes magazine's list of the top 30 young musicians . At the Grammy Awards 2018, Alessia Cara was named Best New Artist . In November of the same year she released her second album, The Pains of Growing .
