production

The music for the film Vaiana - The Paradise Has a Hook was composed and partly recorded by Opetaia Foa'i , Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda . John Musker, the director of the film, explained that since the Polynesian Islands have their very own sounds, they were looking for musicians from these islands who could convey this faithfully. After the musician Opetaia Foa'i, who grew up in Samoa , was found, the singer of the world music band Te Vaka, who made the musical connection to the islands, he was brought together with Mancina. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the third person involved, worked alongside composing the soundtrack on the music for Hamilton , a musical that premiered on January 20, 2015.

publication

The soundtrack for the film, which includes 2 CDs with a total of 59 tracks, was released on November 18, 2016 by Walt Disney Records . In addition to the 14 main tracks that can be heard at the beginning of the soundtrack and other pieces of music, the deluxe edition also contains other tracks, including demo versions, outtakes and purely instrumental karaoke tracks. The film itself was released in North American cinemas on November 23, 2016 and was released in Germany on December 22, 2016. The German original film soundtrack was released on December 16, 2016, some of which contains translations of the songs used in the German dubbed version of the film.

reception

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter sees Oscar potential in the work on the score , and he also considers the song We Know the Way to be Oscar-worthy. Other critics see it the same way. Glenn Whipp from the Los Angeles Times, however, sees the song How Far I'll Go as a promising candidate. Both songs, We Know the Way and How Far I'll Go , were included in the list of candidates (longlist) at the Academy Awards 2017 in the category Best Film Song , from which the members of the Academy selected the official nominations. On January 24, 2017, there was an official nomination for How Far I'll Go in this category. The soundtrack itself was also included in the longlist for best film music . Auli'i Cravalho will sing How Far I'll Go live during the award ceremony .
