MTV Video Music Awards / Artist of the Year

The MTV Video Music Awards for Artist of the Year have been presented since the MTV Video Music Awards 2017 . It thus replaces the two categories Best Male Video and Best Female Video, which were introduced since the first award in 1984 .

The award, which was introduced this year, is the result of efforts by the station to choose a gender-neutral language. All gender categories were also abolished at the MTV Movie & TV Awards 2017 .
