The 1984 MTV Video Music Awards were broadcast on September 14, 1984; the music videos could be selected from May 2, 1983 to May 2, 1984. The awards ceremony took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and was hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler . It was the first time the awards were presented.
The biggest winner was Herbie Hancock with five awards, followed by Michael Jackson with three awards. The award for Video of the Year went to The Cars for You Might Think .
The most frequently nominated artist was Cyndi Lauper , who, in addition to winning the Best Female Video Award, was nominated six times for Girls Just Want to Have Fun and three times for Time After Time . In terms of videos, Hancock's Rockit and The Polices Every Breath You Take were the most nominated. Both videos were nominated eight times each.
