According to an interview with Channel 5 , Joel wrote the song about his relationship with model Elle Macpherson at the time , which ended with his future wife Christie Brinkley . Joel also stated in this interview that the song should also be understood as an homage to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons . In the song, Joel also sings about an encounter between a downtown man and his uptown girl .
The publication took place in September 1983. In Great Britain , Ireland , Australia and New Zealand the title became a number one hit.
Music video
At the beginning of the music video, a tow truck drives into a workshop, the boss of the company watches television and then goes to his workers. Then Billy Joel and all employees show a choreography. Afterwards, a customer drives into the workshop who portrays the uptown girl in the video , later the choreography is continued. At the end of the clip everyone leaves the workshop. The customer in the video was played by Christie Brinkley .
