Careysburg is a city in the east of the West African Republic of Liberia , it was named after the Baptist preacher , doctor and founding member of the American Colonization Society (ACS), Lott Carey , and is located near the capital Monrovia .

history

The town of Montserrado County was founded in 1859 by settlers arriving from the United States and the Caribbean island of Barbados . The inland location was chosen to counteract the high mortality rate of the settlers caused by yellow fever and malaria . The region around Careysburg quickly became a center of plantation economy ( rubber and coffee ). There is a train station in Careysburg, and the Mount Coffee Dam and the White Plains Water Treatment Plant were built near the city .

From 1964, a broadcasting station was operated by Voice of America near Careysburg . The Duside Hospital , built as the health center of the Firestone Plantation near Careysburg, meets European standards of medical care .
