The MTV Video Music Awards 1987 ceremony took place on September 11, 1987. The award was given to videos that premiered from May 2, 1986 to May 1, 1987. The award ceremony took place at the Universal Amphitheater , Universal City , California . The moderation team was Downtown Julie Brown , Carolyne Heldman , Kevin Seal , Michael Tomioka, and Dweezil Zappa .

This year, a new category, Best Video from a Film, was introduced, in which videos were nominated that were part of a film's soundtrack. The category lasted until 2003. The last time the Special Recognition Award was given .

The winners of the evening were Peter Gabriel , who received ten awards, a record that still holds today. At the same time, at twelve, he also received the most nominations in one evening.
