The Gibson Amphitheater

The Gibson Amphitheater (until 2005 Universal Amphitheater ) was an event venue in Universal City . There was space for up to 6,189 people at concerts. The venue was originally built as an open air venue. The musical Jesus Christ Superstar was the first production to be performed in the amphitheater in 1973 , but had to be discontinued due to adverse weather conditions. In 1982 it was converted into a hall to improve the acoustics.

The venue has been called the Universal Amphitheater since it opened and was renamed in 2005 following a sale of the naming rights to Gibson Guitar Corporation . The MTV Movie Awards and the Teen Choice Awards were held here regularly . On December 6, 2011, it was announced that the Gibson Amphitheater will be demolished to make way for a Harry Potter - Theme park to create. In September 2013, the Backstreet Boys and the musician Pepe Aguilar performed two times each in the event hall. Comedian George Lopez kissed the floor on his last appearance in the event hall.
