action

The jovial mid-sixties Thornton Melon is a true self-made millionaire : although he lacks the necessary school-leaving certificate, the son of Italian immigrants has managed to make a fortune from a small family with a clothing line for plus sizes. Tired of his previous lifestyle, however, he divorced his second wife Vanessa, an unfaithful high society bitch, and finally enrolled at "Grand Lakes College".

He hopes to kill two birds with one stone: On the one hand, he wants to finally catch up on his school leaving certificate and, on the other hand, he wants to help his son Jason, who is studying there, and prevent him from leaving. Because Jason is not - as his father wished and hoped for - the darling of the masses, but rather an inconspicuous follower without a girlfriend. In addition, he has not yet made it into the high diving team (Thornton was and is a gifted athlete in this discipline), but is in the shadow of the local captain Chas Osborne. Only Jason's funky roommate Derek is a friend of his. Thornton finally persuades his son to stay through his matriculation.

With his fun-loving and carefree manner, as well as his loose-fitting wallet, Thornton quickly becomes the focus of the entire campus. He wins the favor of his fellow students, throws lavish parties and stands up to the teachers. Above all, his economics lecturer Phillip Barbay is at war with Melon's personality. But father and son master these hardships together, so that Jason's favor increases enormously and love is waiting for both of them. Jason finally hooks up with his adored classmate Valerie, while Thornton turtles with his literature professor Diane.

But where there is light, there is also a lot of shadow. The Techtelmechtel call the respective rivals on the scene: Diane previously had a relationship with Barbay, who is now even worse off Thornton. And the chubby Chas is angry at Jason for his part, because he himself had an eye on Valerie. In addition, Thornton's environment and Diane's belief in his eagerness to learn is waning, as he prefers to spend his time celebrating than studying and also cheating on his studies. For example, he secretly organizes renowned ghostwriters and writers who produce the essays for him. When these rumors threaten to be exposed, Barbay puts him under pressure in front of Dean Martin: Thornton has to take an oral examination in front of all his professors, otherwise he would be de-registered.

Inspired by this, Thornton pulls himself together and begins to learn like a man possessed, supported by Diane, Derek, Jason and his chauffeur and buddy Lou. In the actual exam, Thornton does more than well, but passes the exam thanks to Diane's support.

At the same time, the college holds a high diving competition with the favored team from another university. Thanks to Jason jumping performance (his father gave him the place on the team) and Derek's not entirely legal distraction, the team creates a decent starting point before the jealous Chas fakes an injury. Ultimately, Thornton starts as a substitute and ensures the Grand Lakes team wins with a legendary and daring jump.

In the end, father and son each graduate from college and celebrate this with their fellow students as well as their friends.

Reviews

"An imaginative and lively staged comedy that also unobtrusively brings generation conflicts into play."

Awards

Composer Danny Elfman received the BMI Film & TV Award in 1987 for best film music .

backgrounds

  • The film is a remake of the comedy Der Spätzünder ( High Time ) from 1960 . Back then, Bing Crosby played the lead role.
  • The University of Wisconsin campus located in Madison served as the backdrop for the "Grand Lakes College".
  • Rodney Dangerfield owned his own club and was seen as a promoter of new comedy talents that he let appear there. At the same time he did it with film productions. So he gave Sam Kinison the role of Communism- hating Professor Terguson. Dangerfield is also trying to get the then unknown Jim Carrey into production. This failed because of the veto of those responsible, who found Carrey too young.
  • A first version of the script stipulated that Thornton Melon was poor. Harold Ramis ultimately changed that to a millionaire.
  • In the film (at least in the American original) there is a play on words about Dean David Martin, played by Ned Beatty. Since dean is called “Dean” in English, Beatty's role part is addressed by the students as “ Dean Martin ” - the well-known entertainer, as it were.
  • Writer Kurt Vonnegut has a guest appearance in the film. He plays himself as one of Melon's dedicated typists. In addition, Robert Picardo appears in a small scene as Vanessa's lover Giorgio.
  • Thornton Melon shows a very daring jump stunt at the jump finale at the end of the film, which bears the fictional name "Triple Lindy". This consists of jumping from the 10-meter tower over three lower-lying diving boards, in which various somersaults are integrated.
