Synagogue (Asmara)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Asmara Synagogue is located on Haile Mariam Mammo Street in the Eritrean capital Asmara .

The synagogue , built in 1906, offered 60 - according to other sources 150 - seats and in the 1950s was still the center of a Jewish community of around 500 people in Asmara. It lost its religious function after the last rabbi of the Jewish community left Eritrea together with almost all believers who remained in the country in 1975.

The synagogue is occasionally open to tourists today.
