You Give Love a Bad Name is a 1986 Bon Jovi song written by Jon Bon Jovi , Richie Sambora, and Desmond Child . It appeared on the album Slippery When Wet .

history

You Give Love a Bad Name originally served as one of the rough drafts of Bonnie Tyler's song If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man) from the same year, which Desmond Child also wrote and flopped. Dissatisfied with the failure of If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man) , Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora reworked it, who was initially also intended for the band Loverboy . Since Jon and Richie liked the song themselves, they sang it themselves. In the end, the single became the band's first number one hit and pop metal and glam metal music respectively . Despite the chorus, it shouldn't be confused with Shot Through the Heart from the 1984 debut album .

In the text, a woman is accused of breaking the heart of a man and playing with his feelings.

It was released on July 23, 1986.

The album This Left Feels Right , for the band's 20th anniversary, features a different version of the song, which is more experimental and has various musical influences, such as country and rhythm and blues . This alternative version does not prevail over the album version. However, it was played at the band's 2007 MTV Unplugged gigs, albeit less experimentally. The song was presented as a medley with Hit the Road Jack .

Music video

In the music video, Bon Jovi perform the song at a concert. This gig, in which they served as the opening act for the band 38 Special , was filmed at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles , California and was the only clip of all the releases from the album Slippery When Wet that was completely filmed in color. The idea of the music video came from Doc McGhee , who was the band's manager at the time, and realized that the band needed a music video for MTV to promote the single . McGhee then hired Wayne Isham , who had previously directed Mötley Crüe's music videos, to direct the clip. Both bands usually competed in the music business, and when Mötley Crüe found out about the break, they felt betrayed.
