Slippery When Wet is the third studio album by the American rock band Bon Jovi . It is the band's most commercially successful album to date and helped the group achieve its worldwide breakthrough. It was released in August 1986 and enjoyed its greatest success the following year.

Stylistically, the album ranks among hard rock and glam metal or pop metal and marked the start of the commercial high-altitude flight of that music genre at the end of the 1980s. It's itself one of the best-selling albums in that genre. The band began with the album also trends, which they continued and expanded with the following albums, but gradually moved away from Glam Metal.

Emergence

Street sign in New York

After Bon Jovi's debut album of the same name, Bon Jovi, with a top 40 hit in the USA, was a respectable success for the band members, the second album 7800 ° Fahrenheit was a flop, especially in the USA. That's why the pressure on the band from the record label had increased, the next album had to be a success. So Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora enlisted Desmond Child's help in writing the songs for the album , with whom they wrote three pieces for the album.

Actually, the album should be named after one of the songs on it Wanted Dead or Alive ; the corresponding album cover would have been a photo of the band as cowboys. Later the title Guns N 'Roses , after the band of the same name , was also available.

And I almost called "Slippery When Wet" "Guns N 'Roses" [...] This is so us, you know, love-songs and cowboy-songs ...

- Jon Bon Jovi

"And I would have called Slippery When Wet almost Guns N 'Roses [...] That's how we are, you know, love songs and cowboy titles ..."

- Jon Bon Jovi (German translation)

These ideas were given up after the band members were impressed by the performance of a night club dancer in a bar in Vancouver. The lady had performed a shower number on the stage and soaped herself from top to bottom. It was then clear that the album could only be called Slippery When Wet .

Inspired by this, there is an alternative CD cover that shows a close-up of a participant in a wet t-shirt contest - the name of the album is on her t-shirt. However, the label spoke out against it. Only in Japan were there versions of the album with this cover. The standard cover was a wet, blurred lettering ( Slippery When Wet ) on a garbage bag.

The songs that found their way onto the album were allegedly determined by fans, the so-called Pizza Parlor Jury (or Pizza Pie Jury), although there are only unofficial and contradicting statements on the part of the band.

Musical style

With the exception of Never Say Goodbye , with which slower melodies are played, the album consists of faster, melodic tracks that are instrumented in a drum and guitar-oriented manner, with virtuoso guitar solos. In terms of style, it can be assigned to Pop Metal , as Pop influences can be heard quite clearly. This combination of hard rock music with catchy tunes made the band known worldwide and brought them a large fan base. In terms of content, the album revolves roughly around two topics: love on the one hand and fun (or hope and joie de vivre for Livin 'on a Prayer ) on the other. Only Wanted Dead or Alive cannot be classified in this scheme. The song deals more with life on tour and has a glorifying and aggressive undertone.

The reviews were not thrilled with the music on the album. They largely attributed the album's success to the catchy melodies, demeanor and looks of lead singer Jon Bon Jovi. Furthermore, the lyrics of the songs lack depth and they only serve clichés.

Interesting facts about the early Japanese editions

  • In the early Japanese editions of Slippery When Wet , in contrast to the international editions, the introductory instrumental was separated from “Let It Rock” and listed as an independent title under the name “Pink Flamingos”. This division was given up with the Japanese re-release of 1991 and the title list was adapted to the international publications.

In the inlay of the Special Edition from 1993 it is incorrectly stated that the live recording of the concert in the Miami Arena in Miami was made in 1993. The live version was originally released on the 1993 Special Edition of the album Keep The Faith .

Interesting facts about the 2010 Special Edition

  • All three live recordings added to the 2010 Special Edition are known only to have been recorded during the Slippery-When-Wet tour. The live versions of “You Give Love A Bad Name”, “Livin 'on a Prayer” and “Wanted Dead or Alive” are therefore not the same live recordings that are included on the bonus CD of the Japanese special edition from 1998 .

Information on individual songs

Single releases

You Give Love a Bad Name , Livin 'on a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive are an integral part of the band's live performances. Other songs from the album are also still played live, in contrast to the songs from the two previous albums, of which only Runaway , Bon Jovi's first single, was played live. This was only put into perspective in 2009 with the The Circle tour, during which several songs from the first two albums found their way back onto the setlist.

The music videos for the singles on the album are similar: they all show mostly live performances by the band. However, the video of Livin 'on a Prayer is divided into two parts: The first part, which is black and white, shows a rehearsal of the band, but the audience is missing. With one beat of the drums, the video continues in color before the start of the second chorus and the audience is suddenly there. Wanted Dead or Alive is completely black and white and mixes excerpts from tour life with a live performance.

Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi played at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards , only with acoustic guitars, a medley of Livin 'on a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive . This appearance is considered to be the birth of MTV Unplugged .

Above all, Livin 'on a Prayer , but also Wanted Dead or Alive , are, according to Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen , in New Jersey a kind of unofficial anthem of the state that is the only US state that does not have an official one.

You Give Love a Bad Name

The song is one of the heavier, more aggressive ones on the album. The text is charged with the behavior of a woman who broke the heart of a man. Because of this song and the actual album cover, the album and the band were accused of a certain misogyny . This also contributed to the fact that the alternative album cover, which is shown in the booklet of the album, served as the cover of various editions of the single. In addition, another picture is printed in the booklet of the album, on which six scantily clad girls wash cars. The story of how the name of the album came about also contributed to the allegations.

Livin 'on a prayer

Jon Bon Jovi originally didn't want to use the title on Slippery When Wet . Two reasons for this were that he didn't think the song was good enough and that it ended up being difficult for him to sing because of the high pitch. Finally, Richie Sambora was able to persuade him to re-record the song for the album.

Wanted Dead or Alive

According to Jon Bon Jovi, he and Richie Sambora wrote and sang the whole song in 1986 in one evening at Richie Sambora's parents' house. The song is inspired by the " Wild West ", which gives the song a distinct cowboy attitude, both compositionally and lyrically. The song is about life on tour and connects that with the "cowboy lifestyle". Despite the glorification of this life, the song has a wistful, depressive aura. Overall, Richie Sambora's contribution to the overall composition of this single is very large.

A special feature and the distinguishing feature of this song is the classical guitar intro with the acoustic guitar. When the song is played live, Richie Sambora usually puts on a Wanted Dead or Alive hat if he doesn't wear one from the start . In addition, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora share the lead vocals of the last verse, unlike on the album version.

The entire first solo album Blaze of Glory by Jon Bon Jovi, published in 1990, has a similar thematic and musical content, thus expressing his affinity for cowboys and the Wild West even more strongly. However, the band has retained this affinity, recognizable for example in Dry County from 1992; but also at z. B. Put the Boy Back in Cowboy from 2007. However, over time, the aggressiveness was largely lost and gave preference to sounds of country music , which also has western references.

Wanted Dead or Alive is the Bon Jovi song most commonly used in movies and series including: Born to be Wild (when John Travolta steals a motorcycle), Scooby-Doo 2 (just before the end of the film ) and in the episode “El Viejo” by Miami Vice (with guest star Willie Nelson ). The soundtrack to the movie Wild Wild West features a rap cover version of the song, performed by Kel Spencer feat. Richie Sambora is presented. The song can also be heard in the film Harley Davidson & The Marlboro Man and can be replayed in the video game Rock Band . In the first episode of the television series Being Human , the ghost Sally quotes the song line I drive all night just to get back home and is then asked if she wants to scare her new roommate with Bon Jovi. In Supernatural , the protagonists Dean and Sam Winchester sing the song in season 3, episode 16, in the musical adaptation of Rock of Ages , the song is sung by Tom Cruise .

On the compilation album This Left Feels Right , Wanted Dead Or Alive was released in an alternative version as a promo single.

Never say goodbye

Never Say Goodbye was the fourth and final single from the album and, according to Jon Bon Jovi, was also made in 1986 at the house of Richie Sambora's parents. The peculiarity of the song is that the band only strikes the slower notes of a ballad for the second time after Silent Night. In the two previous albums, the band had only released a ballad with Silent Night in order to stay true to the hard rock image. But with the following albums the importance of the ballads - the rock ballads - increased and became one of the cornerstones of the band's commercial success: I'll Be There for You from the follow-up album New Jersey became a number 1 hit in the US, Always off the band's most successful hit on the best-of album Cross Road (up to the hit single It's My Life from 2000). The band has continued the trend that the band started with Never Say Goodbye until the end, for example the only hit single from the 2007 album Lost Highway was the ballad (You Want to Make) a Memory .

Other titles

Let It Rock , Raise Your Hands and Wild in the Streets are all songs that are meant to convey lightheartedness and a good mood. The first track of the album Let It Rock has a one-minute intro using keyboard and electric guitar. Explicitly, Raise Your Hands and Let It Rock are about “letting it go” (In the first track “Let it rock, let it go” occurs twice per chorus; with “Raise your hands, when you want to let” it go ”begins the refrain of the sixth track). In Wild in the Streets is told how a group in the car draws musical celebrating in the streets and have fun, to be able to ever forget all the problems of life for a short time. The male protagonist is called "Joey", and there is a song of the same name Joey on the later Bon Jovi album Bounce . However, it is not clear whether these two songs have an intended reference to each other.

Social Disease , Without Love, and I'd Die For You all cover love . The first song describes that you can neither live with nor without love (“Can't live with it, but you'll die without it”) and when you are “infested”, you cannot get away. So love would act like a disease. Similarly, but without the negative aspect, Without Love conveys that love makes life worth living (“Nothing else can get you through the night, nothing else feels right without love”). It is the third song on the album that Desmond Child was directly involved in. I'd Die for You is a man's declaration of love for his beloved one and he promises to do everything for her despite his shortcomings (“I'd die for you, I'd cry for you, I'd do anything, I 'd lie for you ”). Bon Jovi has also played a slow, quiet version of this song during later live tours.

Outtakes

Edge of a Broken Heart

That song didn't make it onto the album, but was then first available as the B-side of Livin 'on a Prayer . Edge of a Broken Heart was extremely popular with fans and was used on the soundtrack for the film The Chaoten Team in 1987 . The song appeared in 1994 as the B-side on the single Always and also in the CD box 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong from 2004. On the accompanying DVD, Jon again apologized for not performing the song had taken the album. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora also wrote this song with Desmond Child. The song describes a man's love for a woman even though she has a different partner, although it is not specified whether the protagonist and the woman were once a couple or not.

Out of bounds

This song didn't make it onto the album either. It was originally written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora for a 1986 film of the same name, but was ultimately not used. The song was only released in 2004 together with Edge of a Broken Heart . In contrast to other songs by the band, it is a heavier and very guitar-heavy song, the keyboard is not used, but the song relies heavily on melody. It thematically deals with life in a criminal scene in an aggressive way and is similar to the content of Jon Bon Jovi's solo album Blaze of Glory .

Borderline

Borderline is another outtake of the album but was released on an EP version of Livin 'on a Prayer in Japan and written by Jon Bon Jovi and David Bryan. Stylistically it hardly differs from the other songs on the album and lyrically deals with a couple who have nothing to say to each other and have lost trust in each other and are about to split up, but the perspective remains limited to one of the two.

reception

The album was a huge success, especially in North America, with over 12 million sales in the US alone - which means a diamond record and a place in the 50 best-selling albums in the US - and delivered two # 1 singles there : You Give Love a Bad Name and Livin 'on a Prayer . It reached first place on the Billboard Top 10, stayed there for a total of 8 weeks and was also No. 1 on the Billboard annual charts in 1987. A video version of the album also achieved double platinum status in the USA. In Canada, the album was awarded diamond status in 1987, and the video version later also went platinum there. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Slippery When Wet was the twelfth best-selling album in the 1980s.

Slippery When Wet is the band's most successful album in Australia and has been awarded six times platinum.

It was also hugely successful in Great Britain: although it did not reach # 1 on the charts, it stayed in the charts for a total of 123 weeks, longer than any other album by the band, and went triple platinum. Only Cross Road , Bon Jovi's best-of album from 1994, sold even better there, reaching five times platinum. In the UK single release, Livin 'on a Prayer is the only one to have received an award (silver), and it returned to the charts in 2008 and 2009 and was in the charts for a total of 27 weeks, so Longer than any other Bon Jovi single. However, Never Say Goodbye did not reach the top 20, nor did two singles from the Slippery-When-Whet successor New Jersey , none of which reached the top 10. The continued success of Bon Jovi singles in Great Britain only began with Keep the Faith from 1992 and lasted until 2006.

With the success of this album, Bon Jovi heralded the massive dominance of hair and pop metal in the music of the late 80s and early 90s. This was followed by successful albums such as Girls, Girls, Girls or Dr. Feelgood by Mötley Crüe , Open Up and Say ... Ahh! from Poison or New Jersey from Bon Jovi himself.

This success is largely thanks to Desmond Child . He was the first co- songwriter of some of the songs on this album . Two of them landed at # 1 on the US charts. He has since worked on each of the band's studio albums. Of the band's four number 1 hits in the United States, only one came about without the direct help of Desmond Child.

In the rest of Europe, the album's success could not be compared with that of North America or Great Britain. For example, Bon Jovi only reached # 11 with the album in Germany, of the singles Livin 'on a Prayer was # 20 and Wanted Dead or Alive was # 47. (However, the latter single in 2001, after it was released as a live version of the album One Wild Night Live 1985-2001 , improved by two places and reached # 45). In other countries, Slippery When Wet also made it to the top of the charts, but cannot compete with the successes of later Bon Jovi albums, such as Cross Road or Crush , which both have double platinum status in Germany, for example, Slippery When Wet has only achieved single platinum by comparison.

Both fans and critics generally consider Slippery When Wet to be the group's best album to date. The magazine Rock Hard, for example, listed the record - as the only work by Bon Jovi - in its best list of 500 albums in 2007 at 222nd place. Andreas Himmelstein reviewed the album in the same magazine as follows: “For Bon Jovi, too, the third album was: Make it or break it! To be on the safe side, Desmond Child was hired as co-songwriter, who was responsible for the two mega hits You Give Love a Bad Name and Livin 'on a Prayer . Back then, when hearing You Give Love for the first time, a lot of people shouted : 'It's been stolen from Bonnie Tyler!'
And they weren't that wrong. In a later interview, Child admitted, 'This was the first song Jon and I wrote together, and I stole the chorus from myself. It's the same as Bonnie Tyler's If You Were a Woman , which I wrote this track for a few years earlier. But this version wasn't very successful. However, I found the chorus too strong to just flush it down the toilet, so we just used it again. '
In addition to the two hits mentioned above, Wanted Dead or Alive was added a multiple refined single release, which made Slippery When Wet one of the best-selling albums of the eighties.
What else is there to say about an album of which everyone who holds this booklet knows at least half of the songs? Maybe just that nobody who has an open ear for stadium rock should be ashamed of having such a milestone in their record collection. After all, very few 'Monsters of Rock' visitors thought Bon Jovi was a bad cast in 1986 when they appeared alongside bands like Ozzy Osbourne and Def Leppard.
At the time, I was only puzzled by the sudden enthusiasm of my classmates at the time for this band. So far they had rejected all my musical suggestions with a disgusted look. In doing so, I was constantly playing top-class players like Possessed, Slayer and Metallica ... "

At the time, however, Slippery When Wet was received rather moderately by many critics, despite its commercial success. This criticism was mainly due to the front singer's appearance. For example, Village Voice magazine certified him “competent irrelevance”, and he continued to behave “like a Springsteen blend in the Disney Channel's Mickey Mouse program”. The success of the album was often explained by critics at the time with the attractiveness of Jon Bon Jovi.

To date, the album has sold over 28 million copies worldwide, making it one of the 40 most successful albums of all time.
