The Circle (english The circle ) is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Bon Jovi . It was published in Germany on October 30, 2009 and reached high chart positions internationally.

Emergence

For 2009 the band initially only planned to release a second compilation, but when the musicians had recorded enough new material, this compilation was finally postponed to 2010, so that initially a full studio album was released with The Circle , before Greatest the following year Hits a compilation of up to four unreleased songs came out.

The first single from the album was We Weren't Born to Follow and was first played on the radio on August 17, 2009. In a Rolling Stone interview, Richie Sambora described the album as a "return to rock and roll".

The Circle was also released separately in a limited deluxe edition, which also includes a DVD with the documentary When We Were Beautiful . It is also the first Bon Jovi album since New Jersey (1988) to be released in selected countries without additional bonus tracks. Jon Bon Jovi explained this with the fact that only one or two finished songs did not appear on The Circle and that they should eventually be used on the following greatest hits album.

reception

criticism

The album sold well worldwide in the first week and was not a commercial flop, but it could not meet the high sales expectations. The reviews were also rather average. Nigel Britto of the Times of India described the album as a “return to tradition” that “will please the old fans”. Billboard.com gave 79 out of 100 points for the "return to the roots"; Metacritic.com , on the other hand, only gave 52 out of 100 points based on 10 reviews. Boris Kaiser from Rock Hard magazine only awarded six out of ten points and said: “If Bon Jovi were German, they would probably go on an election tour with the SPD every now and then . The Circle comes from 40-room villas, but it sounds incredibly provincial: With almost every song you think of small-town festivals, corner pubs, beer and bratwurst, bouncy castles, Sunday shopping - Castrop-Rauxel instead of Prenzlauer Berg. In its ostensible uncoolness, that is actually pleasant at first glance, but on closer inspection it also has a slippery uncle between Roland Kaiser and Pur . In terms of songwriting ties The Circle despite the real fun-making Born to Be My Baby -Gedächtnissingle We Weren't Born to Follow , and other rumors, quite directly to Have a Nice Day and Lost Highway to: Apart from outbreaks, is the eleventh Receipt- Jovi album is neither "real" hard rock nor serious Springsteen homage (like the magnum opus New Jersey ), but still just pleasant background sound with a few occasional hook line heights - and therefore more a must than a freestyle.
