(1998)

Stranger in This Town is the first solo album by Richie Sambora , the guitarist of the American rock band Bon Jovi . It was released in 1991. Sambora was supported by fellow band members David Bryan and Tico Torres ; Tony Levin can be heard as bass player . Sambora did the singing himself for all songs on the album.

Music genre

The album is very influenced by the blues , which is in contrast to the "Bon Jovi sound", which has a more positive mood, which is why this project was not tackled within the band. Although reviews praised the album, it wasn't particularly successful. With Stranger In This Town , Richie was able to win his own fans apart from Bon Jovi, and most Bon Jovi fans were positively surprised by the solo album.

In addition to blues, Richie Sambora has included some classical music influences on his album. The first track Rest in Peace is like an overture and Ballad of Youth has a "classic" intro and The Answer a "classic" riff.

Emergence

After the grueling world tours associated with the successes of Slippery When Wet and New Jersey , Bon Jovi took a break in early 1990. Both Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora and David Bryan released solo albums during the period.

Actually Bob Rock , assistant to Bruce Fairbairn , who had produced the albums Slippery When Wet and New Jersey , had agreed to produce the album for Richie Sambora. However, Rock produced the Black Album for Metallica instead . Ultimately, Neil Dorfsman was found for Stranger in This Town , who had previously worked with Dire Straits and Sting as a producer.

During the band break, Richie Sambora had contact with the members of his first band Shark Frenzy , with whom he had played cover songs in bars. Tom Marolda and Bruce Foster worked on some of the songs on the album.

Song information

Rosie is a version of a song written for the band's album New Jersey . The album was originally planned as a double album, but was never realized. A band version is in circulation as a bootleg .

The song Mr. Bluesman describes an ideal version of a blues guitarist (“And when he'd bend a note / a tear would fill my eyes”) and how Richie himself is now a musician (“Now I make my living as a music man "). For this song he was able to win his musical role model Eric Clapton , who plays a guitar solo in this song.

“I also wrote this song about a young boy wanting to be like his mentor. And it was me wanting to be like him [erg. Eric Clapton]. ”

“I wrote this song about a boy who wanted to be like his mentor. And that was me who wanted to be like him [erg. Eric Clapton]. "

- Richie Sambora

Richie Sambora started writing The Answer when she was 19 and didn't finish the song until 12 years later. The guitar riff actually originated on the piano, and Richie only later transferred it to the guitar.

Much like Jon Bon Jovi, many of the songs on his solo album Blaze of Glory are more aggressive because he had the feeling that he had lost his innocence in the music business because of his fame after his commercial breakthrough, the song Stranger in This Town is the expression for how Richie Sambora felt at that time in his life.
