It's My Life is a rock song by the American band Bon Jovi , which was released as the first single from their seventh studio album Crush . It was first released in Europe on May 2nd and in the US on May 23rd, 2000. Music, lyrics and production are by Jon Bon Jovi , Richie Sambora and Max Martin .

The single reached number 33 in the US charts, making Bon Jovi one of the few bands to land a top 40 hit in the US charts in the new century after the commercial peak with glam metal in the 1980s. In Germany the song was the official title for the European Football Championship 2000 for ZDF.

text

As in Livin 'on a Prayer , a talk box was used in the song . The song also quotes the Bon Jovi classic: A verse in the second verse reads “Like Tommy and Gina, who never backed down”. Tommy and Gina are a fictional couple that the content of Livin 'on a Prayer revolved around . These two characters also appear in the song 99 In the Shade on the album New Jersey (1988), which says: "Somebody even tells me Tommy's comin 'down tonight, if Gina says it's alright".

"The idea with Tommy and Gina is a tribute to our old fans who have been loyal to us from the start."

- Richie Sambora

The text also contains a tribute to Frank Sinatra and his song My Way .

"My heart is like an open Highway,
like Frankie said, I did it my way"

- Bon Jovi : It's My Life

“I've lived a life that's full. I've traveled each and ev'ry highway;
And more, much more than this, I did it my way. "

- Frank Sinatra : My Way

Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi had argued over this part of the chorus. Jon Bon Jovi insisted that Frank Sinatra be kept in the text, although Richie Sambora was unclear why they needed this reverence to Frank Sinatra. However, many did not even notice that Frank Sinatra was being talked about and took Frankie for a fictional person whom every listener of the song could choose to be his own Frankie . Jon Bon Jovi sees this as the special magic of the song.

Music video

The music video of Wayne Isham told by a teenager named Tommy who sees a live broadcast of a Bon Jovi concert on the Internet, in which his girlfriend is in the audience. She uses her cell phone to tell him to come to her. He goes on his way, walks through Los Angeles and experiences some adventures. The video was inspired by the film Run Lola Run and often censored by the music stations at one point when the main actor jumps off a bridge and is almost rolled over by a truck trailer immediately after landing.

The filming of the video took place on March 19, 2000 in the Second Avenue tunnel of Los Angeles, which was closed to it. The video ends with the boy meeting his girlfriend in the tunnel at the end of the song, she asks him where he has been, and he tells her that she wouldn't believe him.
