Dr. Feelgood is the fifth studio album by the American glam rock band Mötley Crüe and the highlight of their career. It was released on September 1, 1989 and rose to number 1 on the American charts. The album stayed on the Billboard 200 album chart for well over 100 weeks .

history

In 1987 Mötley Crüe tried to climb the top of the charts with Girls, Girls, Girls , but it was prevented by the quick start of Whitney Houston's album Whitney . In order to make it with this album, the band switched from producer Tom Werman to Bob Rock , who was a strict and demanding teacher who spurred the rock band on to top performance so that Mötley Crüe could grow beyond the limits of their previous skills. At the same time that the Crüe released the album Dr. Feelgood , Aerosmith , old idols of Nikki, Tommy, Vince and Mick, recorded the record Pump in the same recording studio . That's why both rock bands often spent their free time together after work in the studio, for example to go jogging around a nearby lake. Because when the album recordings began, Mötley Crüe, who had the same drug advisor as Aerosmith, had just been permanently cured of all substance addiction with the help of several hospital stays.

Before recording, the band toured with Whitesnake and Guns n 'Roses . One evening in 1987 Nikki Sixx wanted to celebrate something with Slash from Guns N 'Roses. Slash was already very drunk at the beginning of the tour and went to sleep after a while. Now Sixx continued to celebrate with Steven Adler , the drummer of Guns N 'Roses. Late that night, Sixx overdosed on Persian heroin and then narrowly escaped death in the ambulance of the ambulance, where Sixx had to be reanimated . When he woke up after a while in the hospital, he fled and took heroin again in his apartment, causing Sixx to break down bleeding in the bathroom at home, with the syringe still in his arm. The record company sent the entire band to rehab before recording. Although both Slash and Nikki Sixx denied this, Slash is still cited in the media as the main culprit for this incident.

Although the band was invited by producer Bob Rock to record the album, he describes working with the band these days as “difficult” because the band is “a bunch of tough guys” from Los Angeles “who just drink and kill each other “Want.

With many young bands like Crashdïet , Babylon Bombs or Vains of Jenna , the influence of this album can be clearly heard.

The album cover was drawn by Don Brautigam .

Music style and lyrics

The lyrics are about the band's lifestyle, i.e. drugs, alcohol, women and rock. Love songs are also featured on the album. Many experiments can be found in the guitar passages. In Kickstart My Heart , Mick Mars first mimicked a motorcycle that started , which was popular in the 1980s. In the last part of the song, he uses a trick that makes it sound like the guitar is “talking”. In addition to the guitar playing by Mick Mars, this album is characterized by the "hammering" bass by Nikki Sixx and the fast drums by Tommy Lee. The band itself commented that the band agreed that no instrument should hold back, even if it was "only" a drum kit or a bass.

Importance of the album for the band

At number 1 in the charts, this album was Mötley Crüe's greatest and last major success. After the album was released and toured, Vince Neil wanted to do a solo career on the side, which led to the fact that he and the band split. John Corabi was named as his successor . But the album with Corabi was a failure and while working on the album Generation Swine , Neil was brought back to the band and Corabi fired. The line-up didn't last long, however, as Tommy Lee quit in 1999 to continue solo. With the new drummer Randy Castillo , the band released the album New Tattoo . Both Generation Swine and New Tattoo were well received by the fans, but were not commercially available to Dr. Connect with Feelgood . After Randy Castillo died, the remaining three members went their separate ways. In 2005 they went on tour again with Tommy Lee and released the best-of album Red, White & Crüe . In 2008, with Saints of Los Angeles, Mötley Crüe released a studio album in the original cast for the first time since 1997. Dr. Feelgood is considered the high point in the career, which the band never came close to again.

Singles

Dr. Feel good

The song is about Jimmy, a drug dealer from Los Angeles who sells his drugs to Mexicans. Mötley Crüe pay homage to this as Dr. Feelgood (German: Dr. Fühldichgut ). The song reached number 6 on the Billboard Charts and, with over 500,000 copies sold, is the only record in the group that has ever received a gold record in the United States. In addition, the song was ranked 15th on the list of best hard rock songs by VH1 . There is a cover version of the piece by the American hip-hop band 2 Live Crew for the soundtrack of the movie Hangin 'with the Homeboys .

Kickstart My Heart

This song was written by Nikki Sixx when he nearly died of a heroin overdose after a night of partying with Slash and Steven Adler. Nikki Sixx processed this terrible experience while writing the song. After awakening in the hospital, he fled and again overdosed himself in the bathroom at home. The lyrics deal with being on the move all the time. The music video circumvented this and related the song to car racing and adrenaline to avoid further scandals. In the song, guitarist Mick Mars uses a talk box to alienate the sound of his electric guitar towards the end of the song. With a talk box, the guitarist puts a thin tube in his mouth and uses the oral cavity as a resonance body. Although the Dr. Feelgood and Without You were more successful, this song has become a symbol for the band.

Same Ol 'Situation (SOS)

The song is about being abandoned by his girlfriend and seeing her with a new boyfriend. The refrain is supposed to say that all women are like that and that the most normal thing in the world is.

Without you

Without You is a love song that is about being lost without another person.

Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)

This song is about a separation and can be understood as the opposite of Without You , since the opening passage of Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away) “We could sail away” is followed by the passage “Without you, without you a sailor lost at sea “from Without You fit together.
