2 live crew

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2 Live Crew was one of the most controversial rap groups in the United States , largely because of the clearly sexual nature of most of the lyrics. You are probably the best known proponent of the Miami Bass , a form of hip hop . 2 Live Crew were the first hip-hop band to put the parental advisory sticker on a release .

Beginnings

The initial line-up of Fresh Kid Ice (Chris Wongwon), DJ Mr. Mixx (David Hobbs) and Amazing V began their careers in California . In 1985 they released their first two singles Revelation (1985) and What I Like with Brother Marquis (Mark Ross). The group moved to Miami and eventually got a recording deal with Luke Skyywalker (Luther Campbell). After Amazing V was eliminated, Luke performed alongside Fresh Kid Ice and Mr. Mixx.

In 1986 the first album 2 Live Is What We Are was released, which caused initial controversy. The detailed portrayal of sexuality in particular caused a stir, with a record seller in Florida being charged and acquitted after selling a record to a 14-year-old. The album reached a gold record .

Skyywalker released the next album Move Somethin in a "clean" version. Even so, this time a record seller in Alabama was charged and convicted in the first instance for selling the album to a plainclothes policeman. The verdict was overturned in a later instance.

As Nasty As They Wanna Be

With their third album As Nasty As They Wanna Be , 2 Live Crew achieved their greatest success, mainly because of the single Me So Horny . The song contains a sample from the film Full Metal Jacket (“What'll we get for ten dollars? Every 'ting you want! Everything? Every' ting!”). The single sold very well, although it was barely played on the radio.

The Christian conservative group American Family Association convinced the then governor of Florida, Bob Martinez , that the album was obscene. The album was declared "obscene" and therefore illegal for sale by the highest court in Florida , but this was overturned in 1992 on appeal by the US Supreme Court. Before that, however, three members of the band were arrested for having performed material from the album live, as well as a record seller in Florida who had sold the album to undercover police officers.

The public controversy - there were even arrests related to the sale of the album, and a lawsuit by George Lucas over the name "Luke Skyywalker" ( Luke Skywalker ) - generated a lot of publicity and eventually led to sales in excess of 2 million. Skyywalker released a political solo album Banned in the USA shortly thereafter , for which he legally secured the rights to Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA .

Because of its explicit content, As Nasty As They Wanna Be was the first rap album to carry the warning “Parental Advisory - Explicit Lyrics”, which has since been featured on many rap releases.

In 1991 the first live rap album was released ( Live in Concert ) and another studio LP Sports Weekend . However, both had no commercial success, whereupon the individual group members go their own way.

In 2005 the Berlin rappers Frauenarzt and Mr. Long had the opportunity to record a song ( The party must go on ) for their collab album Porno Party 2 with the 2-Live crew member Fresh Kid Ice.

The New 2 Live Crew

From 1994 the group called itself The New 2 Live Crew and now consisted of Luke, Fresh Kid Ice and Verb. In 1995 the new formation broke up again. Only one album ( Back At Your Ass for the 1994 ) was released.

The End

With Hoochie Mama on the soundtrack for the film Friday , there was a reunion of Luke, Fresh Kid Ice, Brother Marquis and Mr. Mixx for a song together. Since the album Shake a Lil 'Somethin' Luke was no longer with the group and only pursued his solo career. Mr. Mixx left the group in 1998.
