The Khersones ( Russian / Ukrainian Херсонес ) is a Soviet training sailing ship that has been used under the Ukrainian flag after the country's disintegration and since 2014 under the Russian flag .

She was built in the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk in 1988/89 as part of a series of six sister ships, including the Mir . It is named after the ancient city of Chersonese on the north coast of the Black Sea .

Data

The Khersones is 109.40 meters long, 14 meters wide and has a draft of 6.6 meters. She is a full ship with 2,771 m² of sail area and an additional two 570 PS Cegielski-Sulzer diesel engines.

Today the ship belongs to the Kerch Marine Technological Institute, which trains seafarers. Like most Eastern European school ships, the Khersones also takes trainees (paying fellow sailors) on board in addition to the cadets being trained . The permanent crew consists of 40 people.

history

In 1996 the training ship became known throughout Germany when it was featured in the TV show “ Wetten, dass ..? “ Drove through the open Lübeck Herrenbrücke and operated special light switches with the Rahnocken .

On January 26, 1997, the Khersones was the first tall ship to circumnavigate Cape Horn under sail after the four-masted barques Pamir and Passat in 1949 . The Khersones only needed a good six hours longer than the record time of the Priwall (5 days and 14 hours from 50th to 50th parallel) from 1938. However, the Khersones drove in the direction of the prevailing westerly winds (ie in a west-east direction ), whereas the Priwall circled the cape in the usually more difficult and lengthy east-west direction (see Kaphoornier ).

In 2003 the Khersones in Sevastopol received its unusual red paint.

The Khersones regularly took part in the largest European windjammer meeting , the Sail in Bremerhaven , but also in events of the Baltic Sail .

Events in May 2006

The Khersones got caught in the vortex of the Orange Revolution : The Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture, to which the Kerch Marine Technological Institute was subordinated, issued a ban on the Chersonese in 2006 . Since then, the ship has been on the chain in its home port of Kerch . Trips that had already been booked had to be canceled. The Khersones has been used under the Russian flag since 2014. In 2015 she was restored in a dock in Sevastopol .
